Pivot pin placement in Schrade USA 5" lockbacks?

I have noticed that 99% of the LB7's, OT6's etc have the pivot pin placed close to the blade end (very close to the front handle pin). About 1% (mainly custom and collectors editions) of them have the pivot placed farther back, just in front of the centre of the handle. Why the difference? Does one configuration "walk and talk" better? Is one "the better way to do it"? Is one configuration more likely to fail as far as the lock-bar snapping or cracking? Did Schrade change the placement on special editions just so they would look different? Does the difference make a knife more or less valuable? Anything and everything you might know about pivot-pin placement on Schrade 5" lockbacks will be much appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Welcome to BladeForum's Schrade hangout.

Can you post some pictures to illustrate what you mean?

Thanks,
Dale

Both these pics are examples from the galleries of www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us. Hope it's ok to use em as examples. The LB-7 has what I have seen to me the more common placement with the lock-bar pivot about 1/4 of the way down the handle as measured from the front bolster. The 7-OT on the other-hand has the pivot placed further back on the knife about 1/3 of the way down the handle. I have noticed that many of the more collectible 5" lockbacks have this close-to-centre placement while basic production items usually have the 1/4 down the handle placement. Also its seems Old Timer 5" lockbacks had this close to centre placement more often than Uncle Henrys. Is this a difference perhaps due to the different qualities of carbon vs stainless lock-bars and for durability they needed this tweak? Hope this clarifies my question. Thanks. This site rocks. Dave p.s. just to clarify I am referring at all times to the lock bar pivot pin. Not the blade pivot!!!

...and thanks Orvet!!!! Your quick response is very much appreciated. This is in reference to I knife I just purchased that I will be picking your brain about in another thread shortly.

Hey is there a correct terminology for what I am referring too? Is this a cared about and discussed thing? It seems visually obvious but maybe it's functionally inconsequential. That's what I want to learn about: the functionality and durability end of things. Thanks, Dave
