Hey guys I was wondering what you all think the best pivots and stop pins are. The best ones, as long as there not like $10 each.

Ive been looking at the AKS 1/8 ones and I wanted to use their 1/8 bearings but Im not sure if they are the best. One thing that I want is that the pivot and the stop pin look the same. Like are the same size and I can use the same screws.

If you guys could let me know what you think my best choice would be let me know. Thanks

IMO, Chuck at AKS has the best, most consistent pivots on the market. Also the 64 TPI makes adjustment very easy and precise. They are the only ones I use.

Yeah, I use the .250 and .1875 pivots from AKS. They are the most precise and consistent I have found.
I use .1875 stop pins from USA Knifemaker.

I don't understand screws in the stop pin, unless you're using shouldered stand-offs for a stop pin ?

Screws in the stop pin is actually a barrel pivot instead of a dowel pin. If your using a shouldered stop pin there is not need for the screws, the frame screws and pivot screws tighten everything up.

Since we're on the subject...

Are you guys press fitting both sides of the stop pin? Press fit on one side and loctite on the other?

Liam - does that stop pin you posted match your blade width + washer width exactly? Are you set up to deal with a stepped pin? That is something to consider. I am not really experienced with folders but so far have lapped everything to size.

So far I am using hardened dowel pins for my stop... on friction folders I have lapped barrel pivots or standoffs down to size.

The AKS pivots are top notch.

I was thinking for the stepped stop pins and spacers I would just grind off the step and then make sure it measures up to my blade and washer thickness. I dont know how to do a step in the handle material so I was thinking I would just do that.

Liam,
Your asking for trouble if your going to grind off the shoulders. You would have to keep them flat otherwise your stop pin might be canted and throw off the rest of the knife alignment.

Start with a simple dowel pin, it is the least likely way to screw a knife up.

Dan,
I press fit my stop pins on both sides. Depending on the knife I sometimes press fit one side and slip fit the other. There is so little clearance that no loctite is needed.

Can I not just dill the hole through the handle the size of the shoulder? Or would I have to counterbore it from the insde of the shoulder and then tap the outside so it screws into the handle alone? Or could I just drill to the size of the shoulder and feed the screw through it and just screw it into the standoffs and stop pin?

Sorry for all the questions its just you guys seem to know a lot about this.
