I just received my P'kal. I understand that there's a tutorial video for it available somewhere, but I've had no luck locating it on the internet. If someone here knows where to access it i would appreciate it.

That must be the one. Thanks! Is that Southnarc? Serious looking blade ain't it? Maybe I should get myself the trainer knife just to make sure...

Yes be VERY careful when practising, the p'kal is designed with the intent of doing damage, and it does it well. It dosent take long to get the hang of it, the gripping of the knife in pocket takes the most getting used to, as you can see they sit at the top of the pocket, kinda reverse to a normal wave, but the blade comes out naturally into rgei grip. The only time I cut myself with mine was when my finger got in the way, when I was flicking it closed. I shelled out for the trainer, but you can always put some tape along the edge if your only going to be practising deployment.

Thanks for the needed advice videl. For some reason, the older I get the more frequently I cut myself thanks to my own damn fault as Jimmy Buffett would say. I trained with my Benchmade balis by lining the edge with black tape, as per Janich's video, and haven't cut myself with any of them since then. That's the way to go, but the trainer also looks good. I suppose it's a bit expensive as it is an exact duplicate of the P'kal, except of course for the blade.

I'd recommend you buy the Martial Blade Concepts video series and Fighting Folders DVDs if you want some serious instruction.

I've trained with Janich's system and really wish Spyderco would come out with a P'kal version of something like the Yojimbo, since I prefer the reverse grip with the blade facing outward.

Yes. A waved version of the Yojimbo 2 would be cool as an option.

Thanks. I know about these videos, but I believe that Janich illustrates his fighting folder instruction using a Delica and similar blades, not the P'kal. I also have a Superhawk which, while not a pikal type knife, is meant to be held reverse grip with the blade out, afaik.

Not to Hijack, but Has anyone seen the Shivworks Reverse-Edge Methods DVD's for sale lately? I hear that they're required veiwing for anyone interested in Pikal, but I can't seem to find copies for sale..

B. Anderson, that was not a hijack at all, as I believe those dvds include instruction in usage of the p'kal (afaik). I asked the same question in my original post at the Spyderco forum and received the following link in response:

Yup, those are the Shivworks videos.

Good stuff, quite simple to understand, the main thing is to practice right, and practice under "realistic" conditions against a resisting opponent wearing more or less EDC.

+1 to these. I've ordered about 6 dvds and some books from Janich's staysafemedia and they are pretty informative and entertaining due to MJ's er....um...shall we say "frankness."

Thanks again for the advice. I was practicing with the trainer and at one point the dull trainer edge flicked my palm as I practiced deployment with the wave function. I'd better get that right first, before I try it with the real thing. Curved blades are a bit more prone to bite me for some reason.

Can you order a shivworks disciple from the ccdefense website? I looked at it a bit but can't figure out how to order a disciple.
Thanks
TC

Nope. "out of stock". And shivworks website doesn't show anything. It has buttons but they aren't linked or clickable.
