Yes be VERY careful when practising, the p'kal is designed with the intent of doing damage, and it does it well. It dosent take long to get the hang of it, the gripping of the knife in pocket takes the most getting used to, as you can see they sit at the top of the pocket, kinda reverse to a normal wave, but the blade comes out naturally into rgei grip. The only time I cut myself with mine was when my finger got in the way, when I was flicking it closed. I shelled out for the trainer, but you can always put some tape along the edge if your only going to be practising deployment.
I'd recommend you buy the Martial Blade Concepts video series and Fighting Folders DVDs if you want some serious instruction.
I've trained with Janich's system and really wish Spyderco would come out with a P'kal version of something like the Yojimbo, since I prefer the reverse grip with the blade facing outward.
Yup, those are the Shivworks videos.B. Anderson, that was not a hijack at all, as I believe those dvds include instruction in usage of the p'kal (afaik). I asked the same question in my original post at the Spyderco forum and received the following link in response:

Can you order a shivworks disciple from the ccdefense website? I looked at it a bit but can't figure out how to order a disciple.
Thanks
