I need a place that will heat treat my first knife, I am in the Los Angelos Area or CA, more near to Van Nuys and Chatsworth, it is O-1 steel. Also, when I was grinding it, I got a number of gouges(small, it got sucked between the work rest and the wheel) in it, as it is my first blade, and first time using the grinder, I would normally not keep something like this, but It is my first knife, and it is a gift for my dad, and he said its what he wants, I am nervous about taking the blemishes out, in fear or taking out to much steel and making it weak, anyone have any tips for this? Also any place that I can get this parkerized?

You should be able to find a local heat treating place if you crack open the yellow pages. If you can't find anything though, let me know, and I can put it with a batch of mine and do it for you.

Pacific Heat Treating is in the greater LA area, and does blades. Sorry, I don't have their number.

Only one completely safe way to get the gouges out -- sandpaper. Get some and sit down in front of the TV and go to town.

Texas Knifemaker's Supply does single blade heat-treating, but I'm not sure if they do 0-1.

You might be able to contact and convince a local gunsmith to parkerize your blade for a small fee.

Good luck, and post pics when you're done.

So are light and sometimes deep gouges pretty common? Or do you pretty much stop when you get better?

I can't really say, I've pretty much just started out myself with all of 5 knives under my belt (not counting the crappy ones I made as a kid). It does seem to be getting easier though.

If it's a single blade, I'll heat treat it for you, no charge. I use Texaco type A as a quenching medium. I do all my knives triple quench, triple temper. I know I'm out in PA but it may be cheaper to mail out to me. Your call. Let me know.

I remember well my first one. It was not very long ago. It too was of O1.

Send it to me if you like. It will cost you nothing and I will even cryo it for you, so long as it is not real large in size.

Email me if you like. rlinger1@netzero.net

EDIT: J. Neilson, I did not notice your post just before mine. Please forgive me.
