This is probably a milestone event. :)

I ran out of blade steel working on the latest project. Not a big deal, obviously, but I wanted some material to use on the next project, whatever that may be.

All too often I hear newbies being advised "go to Aldo, get some of his 1084". With those words echoing in my head, I did just that last night... some 1/4 inch stock and some 1/8 inch stock. Both in the 48 in length.

I guess that means I won't be doing as many damascus projects going forward. But then again, you never know.

Am I the only one thinking addiction??? I just did the same thing and I can't wait till next time.

Should have gotten some 15n20 to go with it. Call him first thing in the morning and see if it has been shipped out yet. If not, ask him to add some to the order. Pretty sure the UPS guy comes to his shop between 2 and 4 pm EST

Aldo is a great guy to deal with!

Getting a package from him always makes the day better.

Aldo is rightfully known for 1084, but he carries other excellent alloys as well, nearly always at the best prices I've found short of ordering a semi-load directly from the mill.

Received my steel today. Something tells me this will last for a little while.

I guess great minds think alike. I must have ordered one day prior to you I received a large amount of CPM steels yesterday; the UPS guy was not happy.

Tonight I placed my second order... replacing some of the 1084 I've been giving away, and picking up two kinds of stainless (CPM S-30V and CPM S35VN) to see how well they work out. Almost having a grinder seems to be making me bold... ;)

My only problem is forgeting to order everything at once. Just when I get a tube of steel from Aldo, I think of something else and "have to" order again.

I got my steel from Aldo today, and I will never mess with a file again other than to remove 1084. The 1084 is like butter compared. I ground out a profile in about 1/3 the time it took me using "annealed" files. I got 1/8, 3/16th, and 1/4 thicknesses. Haven't messed with the w2 I got yet, thats for a tanto and something I'm not ready for quite yet.

I actually was considering doing a post titled:

Newbs like me with old files please read this.

After grinding about 12 knife like objects out of files and spending days fighting them I finally got some 1084 from Aldo.

Do yourself a favor and follow these steps.

step 1: call Aldo, get some 1084. Its WAY EASIER to work with hand tools than old files. Spend the 40 bucks, Its a no brainer.

step 2: make knives with it

step 3: go back to step 1.

Plus hes a cool guy, had a few great conversations with him this week . Lets just say he has a lifelong customer.

W2 is not bad until you harden it. Then it gets a tad abrasion resistant, especially if you leave it up around 62.;)
