Howdy everybody,

First time posting here. I'm in Abu Dhabi on business right now. Went to a sporting goods store the other day and noticed they sold switch blades and other automatic type knives. Their selection was, well, crappy, and the knives also looked rather crappy. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that sold good quality knives in either Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Ordinarily I'd just pick up a phone book and look for knives or cutlery, but phone books don't seem to exist in this country. (well, everyone says they exist but I have yet to see one anywhere, and the phone company's own online version is full of catagories with no listings, when I know full well that there are such stores in town)

Anyway, any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Howdy cowboy,

UAE :barf: :barf:

Hi,

I'm not quite sure what kind of knives you are after, but in Dubai in the bazar you can find quite nice Jambaya's (sorry if the spelling is wrong).
I still regret, that I didn't buy one when I was there, but for me the seemed to be too expensive.

hope this helps.

If he goes to Israel himself he'll have one hell of a time trying to get back to UAE.

Yeah, can't go to Israel. They spend a minute or two looking at your passport when you arrive and the only thing they are looking for is evidence that you've been to Israel. If they find any, you don't get in. Period.

I've looked at the curved daggers everyone has, but they seem to be nice looking on the outside, but the blades just suck. A lot of them were aluminum I think.

I'm looking for a store that just sells knives, or one with a large stock of them. In Fort Worth we have the House of Blades, so something like that would be good. In the souks so far I've seen lots of bad knives, although I bought a few of the huge Pakastani butcher knives, those things are 3/8 inch thick! But most have been crappy stuff that you'd find in the $5 barrel at a gun show.

It's my little cousin's birthday today, and I want to get him a good pocketknife. I may end up buying a kit from kitknives.com and making him one. Maybe engrave his name on it or something, that might be the best way.

A dagger would be cool, but a good pocketknife is much more practical. Or, if I can get a good deal, maybe both :)

I've been in Kuwait for 1 1/2 years. I've visited Egypt and Dubai and turned Kuwait inside out. I've never seen a quality knife that didn't come from the West and you can buy them online for less than you'd find in a souk. Arabs like flash over substance and I think what we take for crap is their good stuff.
As for visiting Israel they don't stamp your passport, you're given a paper visa that you can hide/put away anyway you want. They know what the situation is and take care of travelers. You just need to find a country/airline that will take you there.

When I was in Qatar, the best I could find was Swiss Army in the malls.

Does British Airways have that Skymall thingy? Where you can shop for merchandise on your flight? I know they always carry some swiss and leatherman if that is your bag.

If you are lucky, someone here on the forums could shop for you and send you what you want.
