I was looking far and wide for just such a beast a month or so ago. A call to Emerson Knives confirmed the rumors that they no longer ship plain-edged Commanders to their dealer/distributor network.

I had to bite the proverbial bullet and buy it direct from Emerson Knives and pay full retail even though discount prices are readily found in the market for combo-edged Commanders. That said, I must say that I'm pretty happy with the knife...

I know how you feel. I wanted a CN, plain edge for a while. I even saw a dealer list them. When I checked, I was told it was a VERY limited run and he was told they were no longer being made. I guess I will have to save some more pennies so i can get a plain edge.

baffle them with your BS.

I'm going to start taking my business to companies that offer proper consumer choice if this kind of thing keeps up. Personally, I think that partial serrations are as useless as tits on a bull and should be totally abolished, but I must say that I do like the aggrssive appearance of the partially serrated Commander. When I do get mine I'll probably never carry or use it anyway, so there's no concern about the decrease in utility. What I really want a plain-edge, satin (not crappy bead-blast), CQC-7B though. I still feel that I was forced to "settle" for my existing black, partially serrated model.

I dunno what the mess is with all this really.. but I know it is just not right. It is almost like exploitation.. but hey it is a free industry.

sniperboy, you do know that this is not a balisong? What are you doing here? Just kidding! I carry a satin partly serrated COMMANDER myself and the serrations work great! It is my primary carry carry knife. My 42 s are just for fun, carried often all the same.

Let's just say I got lost

hehe. but yeah at first I didn't liie emersons until I found out what that little hook on the top was for! Wow a friend of mine practically ripped my hand open with his emerson trainer. and you knwo how gaga I go for kinetic openers >_< but i just hate serrations. it is so unfair

I just received a plain edge Commander in Green T that I had to buy directly from Emerson. The knife is excellent and the cost differential is not that great.

budrichard:

All fine and good, but then you're in the US and do not need to contend with exchange rates, extra shipping, taxes, duties and the chance that a Customs agent might take a liking to the knife and decide that it is really cool and keep it.

These things are bad enough when paying the discounted dealer prices. However, it's pretty hard to swallow US$139 for a CQC7 when the average Internet dealer is charging $90-something.

You send me Cubans and I will send you knives!
Seriously, you do pay more from Emerson Knives directly. I had to pay US$220 for my Commander when the street price is around US$189. But considering the product, I want the plain blade, so I pay the freight.

budrichard,

Whaddaya mean by "...the cost differential is not that great."???

I don't know about you, but I know of several Internet knife retailers who at one point or another sell a combo-edged/Black-T Commander for around $145. That's $75 LESS than the $220 that I paid for the satin/plain unit that I just got from Emerson directly.

To add insult to injury, the combo-edged ones should theoretically cost more because of the additional manufacturing step of serrating the blades... Sheesh.

By the way, the Satin Finish Commanders that are now out are no comparison to the original run of Commanders, the first 1,000, some of which were Satin Finish. I had one, I think it was #142, and I traded it for a large Bud Nealy Pesh Kabz because I thought I could pick up another Commander like that, (buzzer-sounds) wrong. Dammit.

So, I bought a lefty Commander from Ernie in Atlanta...plain edge.

I have a Black-Ti that is #742 I believe, plain edge.

I have a 1999 Black Ti, plain edge.

And the CN-Coated Commander/CQC-7 set, Forget the serial number altogether on them.

Oh yeah, and a really nice Commander Trainer, I need a couple more of them and a couple of the CQC-7 Trainers..any Internet Dealers have these in stock?

I was the one to get Don's Satin Commander! It was a great knife, unfortunately, I traded it for a custom crawford folder, and do not know where it is now, if I did, I would surely try to get it back. To bad they aren't made like that anymore

Don, the night you peeled open the flesh on my arm with your commander in that sushi place, i just HAD to have one. I never really took an intant love to the commander, but I instantly went gaga when you taught me how to 'properly' use it. .and I go crazy over kinetic folders (i.e. balisongs, commander, gunting).

so you are saying (forgive my ignorance in emerson knives) taht the first run of commanders had a better fit and finish than the newer ones? IN what way?

FWIW, a conversation with the Emerson folks a few weeks ago revealed that all plain-edged Commander will now only be availble from them directly. It seems they're only going to sell combo-edged units through their dealer and distributor networks.

I believe this is also the case for other variants as well (i.e. Green-T blades, lefties and trainers) I did, however, see at MD Enterprises' site that they have/had lefty Commanders for sale...

Oh, BTW, I was told that all the current satin-finished blades now have hard chromed finishes; the original run a few months ago had blades with a chromium nitride finish...
