Plain or serrated edge~ what's your choice and why?

I prefer the plain edge blades, some like the serrated....which one's for you and why, partially serrated or full?

I usually carry 1 of each. Serrated for the tougher cuts and plain edge for the finer stuff. My SE knife is usually a Paramilitary SE, plain edge a ZDP Stretch 2.

plain edge is easier to sharpen, but partial serrations do come in handy for a lot of EDC tasks, such as opening difficult packaging

I like either, but generally go with a serrated edge because it just eats through everything so easily. I have also figured out that a serrated edge will do just about anything a plain edge will do, which I used to believe was not the case.

My personal opinion: PE > SE > partial serrations

PE can do everything a SE can do, but not vice versa. Ex: Try cutting wood with SE. Also, I have easier time sharpening PE.

As for combo edges, I just plain do not like the aesthetics. Also, unless you have a very long blade, the serrated portion is not long enough to take full advantage of SE, and the plain edge portion is not long enough to easily cut things like wood. Also, when I am putting a lot of force into what I am cutting (ex: hard wood), I like using the part of the blade that is closest to the handle. Obviously that is a no go with a combo edge.

Again, just my personal opinion and experience.

Both knife types will do just about any cut just as well as each other. If they're sharp. Plain edge is easier to keep sharp, and easier to do some fine cuts with, so that's my choice.

SEs can cut much more aggressively than PEs (obviously), but SEs are a B!@#$ to sharpen. I friggin hate sharpening them. When I create a burr on an SE, it just does not go away.

I prefer a plain edge, i do woodwork and sharpen a lot so it works for me. i have a fully serrated blade on my MT (leatherman wave) and i like having that as well, incase i need to cut a seatbelt or something, IMHO they both have there place, for me a serrated blade will only see emergency use.

I avoid having a comboedge on anything shorter than 4". Plain edge or fully serrated.

A <4" comboedge is essentially the knife equivalent of a spork. You don't get that many serrations and you lose a bit of cutting edge. It's not useless, but it has marginal performance in both aspects.

CE with the serrations at the tip, since it provides more grip as the material is slipping away and leaves the edge close to the choil non-serrated for more delicate tasks...but since there are very few knives like that, I almost always go with PE.

I prefer a plain edge simply because i can sharpen a plain edge. When a serrated edge gets dull it rips more than it cuts and i'd rather not rip when a cut is needed. I do like how sharp serrated edges cut but since i can't sharpen one i'm better off with a plain edge.

since most folders are recurved I like some serrations on the recurve part at least. recurves are hard to sharpen, so might as well get a CE

since most fixed blades are pretty big I see no reason why one would need 6" of plain edge when 4" will do just fine

I like both. Each style has it's uses. One of the most useful knives I have ever owned is a Spyderco Military with full serrations. I have and use several knives with partial teeth and always seem to find a uses for them. I have many knives with NO teeth and do well with them as well. I'm one of those folks who always seems to be able to make use of what I have in my pocket without too much drama. But I also like to use certain things before making a hardcore decision as to it's pros or cons. That is why I own (no serrations / partial serrations / and full serrations) I have had good luck and lots of use for all.;)

I've never felt like I needed serrated edge. I've had some and they just don't appeal to me.

I like a plain edge Much Better. I carry a large pe rf pocket and a se

Dragonfly lr pocket. I have bigger se knives but the dfly is big enough to

use when I do need an se.

I think a ce is pretty much useless..not enough length of either type of

blade( pe or se) to be good for much.

Sharpening an se is Easy on a Sharpmaker.:D:D
