Plain or Serrated?

I was just wondering what people's personal preferences are. I find serrated to be better. After all, you never know when you'l be called upon to saw something.

I personally prefer plain; it gives you a good amount of blade to work with and works more universally.

but serrated does get the job done quite quickly when it comes to rope and stuff. I usually use a combo edge when using it for utility

I prefer a partially serrated blade. First off the serrations are better for cutting stuff like rope and if you need a plain edge then you've got one too. It also looks really cool. I rarely buy plain edged knives.

I prefer to carry a plain edge for my main blade. I used to carry only combo edge, but after some thought and experience, I have learned that a plain edge serves my purposes better most of the time. Now when I have to cut something fibrous like rope I carry a fully serrated blade in addition to my plain edge.

I prefer one of each

BTW, Im looking for a 42s user, that's beat up and really nicked all over (not even close to being NIB

). I would like to obtain a 42s user for around $80, so if you have so many 42 or 42s and would like to parse one out, send me an email!!

For the most part I perfer plain edges. However, I use and like serrations as long as the blade is fully serrated. I rarely buy partials as I think it's mostly for looks. As a result I carry a plain edged blade and a serrated blade works great and gives me a reason to carry more blades. Now if there was a fully serrated bali I'd buy that in an instant.

I prefer partially serrated for everything except a bali. I find that the serrations end up getting a lot of use with stuff like rope, wood, other stuff that requires some sawing. In the case of the bali's, i dont use them as daily carry's, so straight edge is just fine, and sometimes not as bloody

I prefer serrations over plain edge anyday. Like Mykl said, I only wish there were some fully serrated balisongs out there.

Can anyone tell me what advantages plain edge has over the serrated edge? I can barely think of any. Here are some advantages of serrations (anyone feel free to add on to my short list):

- Better for slashing
- Better for cutting heavy duty materials (rope, cardboard boxes, etc.)
- Will last longer sharp than plain egde(usually)

I use the serrated parts of my knives for practically everything.. I just can't think of one thing plain edge is better at.

I suppose plain edge has an advantage if you were trying to kill someone, as violent image as that is. I read that in the first world war that anyone with a serrated bayonet was treated with extreme prejudice when captured by the enemy.

Maybe with a serrated edge it's easier to feel the difference between the bite side and the safe side ?

I wouldn't want to feel the bite of either serrated or plain edge.

For me, i'll take the plain edge anytime. It looks more of a knife to me. If i wanted a serrated edge, i'll get a saw.

Plain-edges are better for push-cutting and precision, while serrations are good for sawing type cuts, against stuff like rope. A roughly sharpened plain edge can kinda serve as a serrated blade.

I like plain edged only because they're easier to maintain (sharpen).

But I'm with TIQUE, I always carry a fully serrated knife as well........ because, ya' never know when you'll need to cut a bunch of rope.

I try to buy the highest quality I can my last 10 pairs are plain in front and serated in the rear I have no problem with either kind.

thanks

My preference is a partially serrated blade. I have found it quite handy on certain tasks.

Like Clay most people can sharpen a plain edge easier than a serrated one; however, if you have a Sharpmaker 204 then the opposite is true. I can get a torn up serrated knife razor sharp(sucks testing sharpness of a serrated knife on your arm hair, or lack thereof) faster than I can a dull plain edged knife.
