Plain S30V Blur?

I really like the Kershaw Blur series. I'd like to pick up the Blur in S30V but I prefer plain edges over serrated ones. I was wondering, if anyone knows if Kershaw plans to release a plain version of this knife?

Nikokurausu, the S30V Blur is an exclusive for one of our west coast distributors. They ordered a short run of these special Blur's in combo-edge only. At this time, we don't have any plans to do a plain edge version (well that is unless a larger customer steps up and orders a short run).
 
Hey Thomas, who are these “distributors” that seem to have so much power over the cutlery market, and do you think there is any way for people to petition them into ordering something? It seems odd to me that all a distributor has to do is say, “hey, I’d like a few thousand of these.” And then you just go and make them. When (with a few exceptions) the general public is powerless to suggest anything to manufacturers. I wonder if we, the public, would be able to see more progress if we had a distributor on the forums to help get specialty stuff produced, like the S30V blur, only in plain edge.
 
It appears to me that if a distributor preorders 2,000 knives, then 2,000 knives have already been sold from the manufacturer's perspective. If the distributor wants to take that kind of a gamble, then they risk losing, not the manufacturer. Why should Kershaw make 2,000 knives because a couple of guys say it would be cool? There needs to be some evidence that there's profit to be made in doing something like that.

On a side note, I don't think the public is "powerless" to suggest things to the manufacturer, that's why Thomas is such a frequent poster in the forum in the first place. Thanks Thomas;)
 
I suspect that if Joshua wanted to order a couple thousand knives, Kershaw might be willing to humor him. ;)

Joshua J, there are a handful of large jobbers(Blue Ridge Knives, Moteng, etc.) that do step up and order short runs of knives that they feel would be good to see on the market. I don't think that it is that they have so much "power" over the cutlery market, I just think they are big knife fans, and get excited about bringing on a sprint run of knives for the elu's enjoyment. There have been some pretty cool LE Kershaw's hit the market that would have never otherwise (the S30V Blur's for example).

I also don't think the consumer is powerless, just look at the TI/ZDP Leek that is just now hitting the streets. That project was a direct result of a few threads here on BF's.
We have even had threads concerning our next ZDP project, which again, you the consumer have had input in. I know Spyderco has also reached out to its customers in an effort to make up short runs based on your all's ideas, and if I recall correctly, they even had a knife design contest, and the winner had a knife that went into production. Believe me, we are listening, and you certainly are not powerless.

I think a distributor on BF's would be a good thing, and a great idea.
 
First off. Thomas, you are one of the exceptions. Outside of you and Sal, It’s a rare thing to see a major knife manufacturer interact with the ELU’s in a significant way (If you guys that frequent individual company forums are actually having an influence, let me know. I’ll be pleasantly surprised).
The reason I’m so worked up about this is that, as a Steel junkie, Kershaw’s baseline steel Sandvik 13C26 is pretty lacking compared to something like Spyderco’s VG-10 (sorry to be so blunt). I feel that steel with better edge holding would be better suited to Kershaw’s mid range knives (Sandvik 19C27?). Every time I see a sprint run with upgraded steel I can’t help but wonder why it doesn’t happen more often, and if there’s anything I can do other than sit there and drool. I already plan to buy most of your high end stuff, but if there was more I’d get more. I guess my next question should be, how many people would like to see Kershaw use high end steel more often?

I would. That used to be a problem with Kershaw and CKRT. It's gotten a lot better though. The 13C26 is actually a pretty good steel and is a step up from the old 440A, AUS 6A rut they were in. They have knives out in S30V now, and ZDP 189. Whether a jobber ordered it or not is irrelevant as we get the knives. Other companies work that way too.

I'd love to see the success Spyderco and Kershaw have with their sprint runs take off and begin a "steel race" in the industry. It would be great for almost everybody involved. I want steels like S125V and M4 in production folders. I'm old enough to remember being able to buy Vascowear folders and even kitchen knives. Oh well, vote with your dollars and reward the Thomas W.'s and Sal G.s with feedback and getting the word out when they make knives that set the bar higher. IMO we need guys like this at the top of all major knife companies. Not just business guys but knife guys first. Thomas W. , thanks for the ZDP leek. Mine comes in 2 days. I agree with the message of your post, but you have to keep in mind that Kershaw just released a ZDP-189 Leek based totally on requests of people on this forum. There was a thread about how good a ZDP-189 Leek would be. Some suggested it would be even better with Titanium. Thomas asked how many of us would buy one. Many people said they would. Thomas said he would look into it. Not long afterwards it was made a reality.

Kershaw (as well as many other companies) do listen to us.
 
It seems like if you are willing to put up the dough for 1000 pieces pretty much any manufacturer will make you a run of something special.
