Plain Umfaan

How rare are plain Umfaans, and does anyone know how much were made in total ?
I have one of these plain ones, but i never saw more in my social circle.
The ones that are in the hands of some of my friends are all decorated.
Also does anyone know why the Umfaan has a ridge all around the sides of the handle slabs ?
Maybe more grip ?

Thanks, kwackster! I never noticed the ridge on my graphic Umfaan. Learn something new everyday.

I wouldn't mind seeing the thumbstud modified to be a little easier on my thumb.

I'd like a plane Umfaan. I'd be happy to carry one as a secondary EDC,.. if the thumbstud didn't try to imbed itself in my thumb.
