Plain vs. Combo Edge?

I vastly prefer a plain edge. I've found that serrations get the way more often than they prove useful.

Me too! Also not too sold on Hollow ground but can live with it. Serations tho gotta go :thumbdn:

I find having serrations really handy, dont forget they cut as well :P The edge last longer but are harder to sharpen. If you are ever ever going to need to cut rope or such, get the serrations. It'll save your life :3

You are assuming that we have never tried serrated knives before. Careful, :foot: not every one on here is a noob. But thank you for your input ;)

we have beaten this topic to death....in a poll a while back it was like 96 percent for plain edge. serated is good for cutting rope all day. Hope this helps you out. :D

Save yourself some trouble, carry a plain edge and a fully serrated. Its much more usefull on a whole, an inch of serrations isnt going to do a whole hell of a lot if you plan on cutting thicker rope. Not to mention the location in the rear of the blade makes them less usefull than they could be.

Cheers,
Patrick.

I think this is the best advice. Although chances are, you won't even need to carry both on your person. You usually know in advance when you have to cut a bunch of rope or something. You could keep a serrated edge knife in your home, where you work, or in your vehicle.

I'm not very fond of combos, I'd say either plain or fully serrated. I preffer PE (although my EDC is a SE, but that's another story).

I personally prefer PE for my tasks. I have several combo edges and for me, they aren't the best for my EDC things. However, I do see merit in having a full SE. It's actually on my list of future purchases - it is highly likely - and it will probably be a Spydie - just a matter of which one :D

pros and cons both ways. I prefer plain edge over combo only because serrations are a PITA to sharpen , although sometimes having the combo is worth it , like when you have to cut say, lots of cardboard.

Serrated is my favorite.

It has 25 % more cutting surface and requires less sharpening.

The big squawk about serrated edges is that they are hard to sharpen (PITA)but I find them as easy to sharpen as plain edges (you don't have to sharpen each notch, tooth, etc.). You just sharpen like any other plain edge blade. I think those that complain about sharpening have never either learned how or don't do it right.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker makes sharpening serrated knives a very fast chore. I'm referring to Spyderco in this response since they started the serrated craze many years ago.

Any ceramic rod sharpening system can easily sharpen serrated knives.

This thread has never been done before. Ever.

Perhaps you can make another thread about which steel people prefer.

I don't like combo edges. As those have said before there isn't enough serrations and they are in the wrong place usually. I carry one plain edge and one fully serrated. Serrated isn't just for rope-I find it works very well on plastics too.

Why couldn't you sharpen a serrated knife?

You're right. I probably should have said I wanted to be able to sharpen my knives with a normal flat stone.
