I have added some new pics (not much better than the others))).
I included the woodlands club I made a while ago to show the difference in size and shape between the early woodland clubs compared to the later plains style.

Best regards

Hi folks
I've been busy lately and haven't been posting much so here is the latest.
The gunstock club seems to have been born in the woodlands tribal area as early as the 18th century. The earliest were quite long (30 inches) much like the gunstocks they were designed after. The plains clubs were usually much later (*mid to late 19th century) and much shorter, obviously made for closer hand to hand combat.
This one was inspired by one in a book of warrior gear that I have. The handle is very hard Norway Pine, the blade is 100 year old millsaw blade, tacked with brass escutcheon pins and the stock has been "fileworked".
The finish is a combination of lampblack, dyes, waxes and red paint in the filework. This one is 21 inches tip to tip with a 4 1/2 inch spontoon blade that's scary pointed. Sorry for the poor pictures, the light was going, i'll take better ones tomorrow an replace.

Best regards

Robin

Wow! Awesome as always! Your work is top notch!

Could you imagine, back in the day, and you see a guy carrying that?

Can't wait to look at that on my computer. Even on my phone it looks bad ads! Nice work as usual, Robin!

ETA: And by "bad ads" I mean "super awesome" or "bad ass"...friggin auto correct.

Robin ... Your work on this piece is exquisite. I'm curious ... how many hours do you have in this project?

Very nice, try using the two times of the day were there are no shadows for the pictures. Nothing beats natural lighting and a outdoor background to imagine that club in the wild three hundred years ago.

Thanks for all the kind comments, I appreciate your opinions very much.

Shooter, I have made a few burlhead clubs but not a rootball yet, have to dig up a small Ironwood this Spring.

Jay, the wood is "Norway hard Pine" I was told by the guy who gave me the piece. He does fine woodworking and fancy house trim and has piles of weird and wonderful scraps.

MC5AW, I played with making it over a two day period (I do a lot of thinking and looking at each stage ;-) The woodland one in Walnut took forever, maybe 45 hours in total. I hand planed the shape with a antique Stanley 101 plane that is about three inches long and had shavings up to my knees by the time I finished shaping the stock.

Thanks again for the comments folks.

Very best regards

Robin
