Just yesterday I heard celebrations on the news of a 2-year period of no commercial plane crash deaths. Unfortunately an Airbus A320 crashed into the Hudson River today due a flock of birds. How damn cliche can it get?:(

Live footage is showing a great deal of the plane covered in water. With any luck, everyone will be OK thanks to the pilot who called in to emergency services before the crash. Please, give positice thoughts, prayers, smoke, or whatever else you are able to conjure up. If anything, those people have gone through a horribly tramautic experience. 146 people could you use all the support possible so please lend any support you can......

My friend just messaged me about this. Thats just crazy. Arent their engines supposed to withstand this kind of thing?

One would hope so....but apparently not in this plane. With any luck the Captains quick actions saved many lives......

The engines are designed to withstand birdstrikes up to a certain point but it sounds like they flew through a flock of geese and had multiple birds go through the engines. The plane can fly quite safely on one engine but they obviously had strikes on both engines and then its just not your day. Today's engines are truly amazing pieces of machinery and seldom break. Think how much a goose weighs and imagine that hitting your car at about 200 miles an hour, then imagine a whole flock of them doing it!

The pilots did an incredible job ditching the plane without much damage and few injuries, the best water landing I have heard of by a large jet. Due to the minimal damage, the aircraft was still afloat an hour later and that is what allowed everyone to get out alive. Credit is probably also due for the cabin crew in evacuating almost 150 people into rafts and onto the wings, must have been a nightmare in that cabin. Well done!

It looks like everyone is going to survive that crash. How often does that happen? The flight crew deserves medals for their performance- kudos to them! Thank God for watching over those people.

I am sorry to hear that that happened. I am happy to hear that everyone made it out alive.

This has become a good news story instead of a tragedy.

Accolades to the pilot upon his amazing landing and prayers of thanks that no one was killed.

5 or 6 long blocks due west of my job.
Initially folks were freaked.
More like holding their collective breath.

If you look at the footage closely the plane was tied off to the FDNY fireboat.

The pilot is a genuine hero in my book.
I hope the mayor gives him the key to the city... if they still do that.

The plane was headed to Charlotte, where I live. My wife and her friend work at the same pre-school. Her friend got a call from her husband telling her, "I didn't want you to see this on the news..." He was on the plane that went down. He told her his socks and shoes were wet and freezing from standing on the plane's wing, but he was unhurt. We just got word that he had a warm meal and a hotel room for the night, and he'll be flying home in the morning. Remarkable.
