I am going to be travelling to New Graham Knives, in Bluefield, VA, some time next year. I'll be looking at a 7-8 hour trip, and have the route that Mapquest came up with. So, maybe 10 hours :p. I plan on going down on a Friday, and coming home on the following Sunday, maybe Monday. I'd like to visit northern NC Winston Salem for a bit, and visit Roanoke. In addition, there appears to be a small park near Bluefield.

I am looking for some good restaurants, things to do in the area including hiking, any other knife/sporting goods shops I should check out etc. The Chamber of Commerce site is kind of lacking, as is the commercial city site. Looking to stay at a local hotel/motel, not looking for fancy, looking for comfortable but cheap. Any annual events going on in July that I should be aware of? Powwows, gun/knife shows? How big is the town? Doesn't seem to be a big town, from whats online. Should I stay in Roanoke? Winston Salem? Another route besides I-81? I also see that NGK is open 10-2 on Saturdays.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I was at NGK just yesterday. That place is murder on your pocketbook. Cheap hotel? Heh! Bring a sleeping bag. After you blow your wad in that place, you'll be camping under a tree somewhere. My advice? Pay for the motel room BEFORE you go to the pharmacy! :D

As for good restaraunts, New Graham has one on site. Fantastic breakfast and lunch. Great specials. True country eatin'. If your trip takes place on your target date, you may hit the town when there's a minor league home game, so that would be somethin to do. The Bluefield Orioles have a real nice stadium. Cal Ripken played there. So did Manny Ramarez and Jim Thome (of course Manny and Jim were "away" players but whatever...). The stadium is just a couple of miles from the Pharmacy.

Cheers and have fun. Prepare yourself. The Chris Reeve display case and the Spyderco section will completely blow you away. I've been to the Spyderco Factory Outlet in Golden Colorado and they had a comical FRACTION of the Spydies New Graham has in stock! :o

Mike takes the title "stocking dealer" to a whole new reality level. ;)

I'm planning a stop there next month on my way back from visiting my son in western Tenn. Can't wait! Tried to get there 2 yrs ago, but got sick on the road and had to go straight home. I'm really looking forward to seeing the place and maybe meeting Mike.

You guys make sure I know your coming. I'm there every day, but would like to be sure to meet you.
Email the store for directions, lodging suggestions etc.

Definitely a fun trip! I stopped by the store on the way home after a road trip to the Mid-West. The wife humored me and let me hang out for a couple hours and play with knives. Definitely check out the soda fountain on site! Great milk shakes and malts. Haven't been there since they made their move/expansion, but I'd love to go back. I have the time, but I just can't justify the cost when I'm not working full time. :(
