Im planning on buying a new survivial blade i am debating on a esee 5 or esee 6. The knife needs to be able to baton chop and do normal camp chores.

6 all day every day. Unless your above mentioned activities include smashing glass and prying with all your might, the full flat grind and slightly thinner blade of the 6 works much better. If you look at the sale forums on the ESEE site, there are hardly ever 6s for sale, but a lot if 5s. The 5 is a well made product, but the 6 is a exceptional knife. The 6 will baton better because of its grind and blade thickness. It will also slice better for the same reasons.

My mate was hell bent on getting an ESEE-6, but when another friend offered us one to play with for a few days he quickly changed his mind. He wound up buying a Bark Fiver Fox River Magnum instead. I didn't take to the ESEE-6 either (which was disappointing as I love my ESEE-4) and prefer a Becker BK-7 or BK-9 for chopping etc, partnered with a smaller knife such as the ESEE-4, Bark River Aurora or Fallkniven F1 for lighter camp duties.

Both are great knives... the 5's a bit heavier because it's thicker.
I love my 5, indestructable knife... I own 2, that should say something about how much I love the knife.
You can't choose wrong imho.

I have no 6 but some people that have both claim the 6 chops better due to the extra length and has a better geometry for cutting.
Maybe find a place where you can hold both and see what you like better, personal preference has a lot to do with choosing.

Carefull, Esee knives are addictive, you'll end up with a whole family in no time ;)

FYI, I have an ESEE 6 if you're interested. New with 2 sheaths. I, too, deliberated over which to buy...now I realize I'm a folder-only guy ;) .

I agree there are other good choices out there. I would try to find a place to handle them and see what feels good. I love the 6 all around, it feels great to me and it is a bonus that it is priced very nicely. If you end up going with a 6, try "The Knife Connection", they seem to stock a lot of ESEEs and have very good prices.
