Planning to use leather rope wrap on my A2 handle

I found leather rope wrap feels much better than paracord wrap, though I am worrying about the rust issues. Can I prevent rust by coating a layer of oil on the handle first before wrapping?

it soakes up water and whatever liquids come into contact with it. You might be able to prevent some rust with a coat of paint or epoxy on the metal below, but the leather itself will be your main problem. if you live in humid areas, rot and mildew will attack your handle shortly.
