The Wife and I will be attending a wedding in New York on October 20th and plan to visit NYC for three or four days while there. She has been there once before but it is my first trip. We are flying in on the Thursday before to attend the reception dinner, the Wedding on Saturday is in New Rochelle, and we’ll fly home the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

We are planning some standard tourist stuff, Metropolitan and Natural History Museums, Liberty Island, Empire State Building. My wife is hoping to get a dinner reservation at Babbo, we wouldn’t mind catching a Play, and we plan on paying our respects at Ground Zero.

So I am looking for recommendations all the way around; what airport to use, where to stay, how to get around, events to attend, places to eat and drink, things to see and do.

Thanks for helping us out, we really want to make the most of the trip!

Born and raised there , the only times I ever went to Liberty Island and Empire State was to show a tourist !! I wouldn't recommend it. The Met is good for a whole day at least, the MNH also. They are just two of at least 100 museums in NYC !

Give me an email before you come. I'll give you my phone # incase you need help with the trains, etc

Use LGA or Newark as JFK is a crowded nightmare for the most part..(LGA and Newark are too, but less so)

Get around using either cab or subway/bus. Cab is more convenient, but Subway is faster, provided there are normal or close to normal service

Hit up Central Park and the surronding neighborhoods. There's also the Cloisters museum up by Fort Tryon park, at one of the highest natural points in Manhattan. You can see Coney Island before they "renovate" the place

Skip the Empire State building as well.
Go to the "Top of the Rock", which is the top of Rockefeller Center, instead. Less crowds, almost as high, 20 floors less IIRC, and the view is just as nice.
Too Boots Pizza is in the underground concourse, mere steps from the Top of the Rock enrtrance...good stuff.
The Met, Museum of Natural History & MOMA are all good.
(The arms and armor room at the met is a must see.)

One more food item, the Hallo Berlin food cart is on 54 & 5th.
Top shelf sausage (wurst) & kraut...my Thursday lunch :D
Like the sign sez "The best wurst in town"

Be sure and take a camera. If you are lucky you can gets some pics of the indigenous wildlife. Maybe a ringtailed PhilL, or perhaps a three-toed Ebbtide or a horned GarageBoy, or a black-maned mete. If you are really lucky, the elusive silverback Esav Benyamin.

Depending on how much time you want to spend at each, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History are on opposite sides of Central Park from each other, about 15 minutes walk. The Guggenheim is a short walk uptown from the Metropolitan, and the Central Park Zoo, which is a gem, is an easy walk downtown from the Met.

I'd love to do a meet and greet, but time will be pretty tight and spotting all the animals in the wilds of NJ sounds time consuming ;)

I don't mind doing tourist attractions, I am a tourist, after all. The Top of the Rock suggestion sound great, though, thanks for that, Ebb. I'll also keep an eye for the Hallo Berlin cart, I love a good wurst!

The MET and MNH Museums are a must for me, my wife has allowed I get one full day for both. I'd forgotten abut the Zoo, I'll see where we can fit that in, Esav.

GB, didn't know about the Cloisers at all, and I'll be dropping you an email before the trip, for sure!

Any other food reccomendations? Good bars, dive or nice? And how do I find out if there are any good bands playng while we are in town? Thanks again!
