Chuck, Don Fogg has the Batson plans, his site is www.dfoggknives.com somwhere in the site it says to e-mail him for the plans, $28.

If winners never quit and quitters never win. What fool said quit while you're ahead?

I just finished a hydraulic press based on the Don Fogg design. Its a bit heavier than needed but makes nice damascus. It has a 3 hp electric motor 2 stage pump 11 gpm 5" ram and ajustable relief valve. It was a fun project. The welds dont look very good but I painted it grey and yellow. Shes called "Velvet Touch" Bruce

I just e-mailed Don for the plans. I took a look at his press on his web site. lloks like a great project. Just so happens I work at a machine shop...

I have seen log splitters modified by changing the wedge and anvil to tooling more suited to knife making.

It's a fine line between "a hobby" and "mental illness".

Mine looks alot like a very heavy duty log splitter in vertical position. After building this one I think a bench type would cost lest and work just as good. Mine is 7 feet tall. You dont need that much I beam. I got a good deal on the ram but I only use 8" of its 24" travel. The whole press could be about 3 feet tall instead. I figure its about 32 tons. Thats what the big log splitters are. 25 tons will work fine Im told. Bruce

Thanks Everyone for the input...I went to work yesterday and talked with my boss about building the press. He knows someone who had a large commercial model for sale. Took a look at it, it has a 7.5" ram with 10+ of travel. Working pressure to 50t. I think it will convert over to a forging press just fine. The best of all was the price, $800. could not begin to believe it. Well now I need to pour a concrete pad for it and pick it up next week. Talk about a high pressure situation,, pun intended.
