Try this on for size it's a good size forge for what your making and it's definately portable.

This is one of Tim Lively's creations and I suggest you check him and the Neo Tribal movement out. I just tried to get on the forum however and didn't find it. You might want to do some searches for recent changes since there were problems with the old forum and it may have been moved.

Further checking shows that Tim shut down the neo tribal forum on CKD so I am lost as to where the current forum might be but I would definatly keep your eyes open for it since there is a lot of great information there and good access to neo tribal tools and inventions.

Hope this helps

Jim

Search the web for horse shoeing or farrier supplies. Theres a ton of portable forges. Even if you want to make one instead of buy one, the pictures and information may help. You should look into a swing out also. All the farriers use them, it hangs the forge on an arm that folds out over the edge of the truck for when you use it. when your not using it, it just folds back over along the wall of the bed.

Jim,

Thanks for posting the washtub forge link. Those Neotribalists come up with some fascinating things!

I happen to have a small portable hand pumped coal forge that I was given by a blacksmith friend. I also have a bunch of bituminous coal. The trouble with this stuff is that it is really dirty burning.

I would strongly urge anyone doing forging to look at propane forges. They are very simple to build or fairly cheap to buy. What you want is a small portable farrier's forge. Centaur Forge is the best source for this sort of thing.

fountainman,
The forges on The Neo-Tribal Metalsmiths FAQ pages are for natural charcoal and not for coal. There's a big difference. Charcoal burns very clean with little smoke. These two fuels are commonly thought of as the same thing but Charcoal has many advantages over coal.
