The several threads on plant identification have made me want to take some time to learn some local useful plants. Can any recommend a good field guide for New England?

Here's an excellent one by a real, hands-on, expert.

Some more. Sam Thayer's first one (The Forager's Harvest) is here, and some others too. Elias & Dykeman's North American Field Guide gets a ton of use. When IDing plants I find it helpful to cross-reference, and use many books to do so.

I have "Edible Wild Plants" A North American Guide by Elias and Dykerman. It is definitely a keeper. The Perterson field guide "Edible Wild Plants" by Lee Allen Peterson is okay. Bradord Angier has a guide as well. Have not spent a lot of time with it as I like the Elias & Dykerman guide better.

The wildflower guides are good as many have madicinal properties as well as good to eat. Mushroom guides are good too, but you have to be really careful with them. It is very easy to make a mistake and mistakes can cause you to be very sick or even die.

I have traveled around a fair amount and tend to pick up wildflower guides by state and any new ones I see in general in the book store (within reason). Have quite a few and they are fun to cruise though although you just need to focus on the general geographic area rather than state by state. It's fun to turn the woods into a classroom, take pictures, and generally just enjoy yourself.

I don't have a book to recommend, but I can recommend some cards I purchased on th net. Just throw the cards in your pack or back pocket and your set. Color picture on the front description on the back.

The Foragers Harvest is a good read. I think it is more oreintated towards east coast wild edibles also IMO.

I'm in CT, meet up for a hike with me and we'll ID a bunch. I like Petersens guide as my go to book. Let me know when you want to go, seriously.

Thanks for the reassurance John. I just ordered that one yesterday.
Like K_, I have a couple Petersens but had heard good things about Thayers books.

I really like Sam Thayer's writing. His new book is terrific.

Kev, that sounds like fun. I'm fairly busy in the future but could do something from Saturday to Wednesday of next week. Let me know if that works for you. Anyone else in CT interested?

Those look like they would be handy, who makes them?

Email me (kevinestela at hotmail dot com) and I'll send you my phone #. I work in Bristol and have the 23rd afternoon very open. Otherwise, I have from 4:30pm on after track practice next week.

Anyone else want to meet up in CT?
