Howdy
So,I have decided to put some effort into learning some
plant ID. I have never been one for reading books,
but since I got an ipad thing,I have been reading some
"outdoors/survival" type books.
I am looking for some beginners Plant ID books
for maybe Midwest,Illinois area.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

While on vacation there I stopped at Brookfield zoo and bought a great book on trees.
Trees of Illinois
By Stan tekiela

Great book that can be used in most of the mid west.

Wild Berries and Fruits of IA, IL, and MO.....One of the best plant books Ive owned. I dont get much from the field guides....They are helpfull, but I strongly suggest you find someone in your area to do a plant walk with. Maybe a class or something. Ive learned waaaaaay more just woodswalking with folks.

Heres a link to that book. I got mine local at barnes and noble, might check there if you have one close. No smoke blowin. You NEED this book.

I also use a petersons guide to eastern and central US....It is ok, but honestly it hasnt helped me much. The other book is way better IMO.

I'm pretty sure these work for IL:

Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide to Over 200 Natural Foods By Thomas Elias, Thomas S. Elias, Peter A. Dykeman
A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and Central North America by Lee Peterson
Identifying and harvesting edible and medicinal plants in wild (and not so wild) places by Steve Brill and Evelyn Dean
