Well we bought a new home and I have carte blanche from my wife to pick out a tv for our family room I have the brand down, Samsung and I am looking at a 46" 8000 series in LED-LCD or a 50" in their 8000 series Plasma, both are 3D and top of the line, but I can't decide LED-LCD or Plasma. Any advice?

LED will be more responsive, brighter, and longer lasting. Along with being thinner and having lower energy consumption. The only real disadvantage is they are pricey and it's hard to find them sized >40".

Plasma is the older technology out of the 3, and LED is the newest. one of my buddies who works in tv section at best buy said that the Plasmas come standard with a much higher frame rate than the other 2, and will be cheaper. one disadvantage is the display is glass so you have to worry about glare...Josh has the other stuff correct as far as i know.

If it's going to be on a wall opposite windows then skip the plasma as the glare would be ridiculous. That being said I actually own and prefer plasmas but only in a controlled lighting environment.

The viewing angle is better with plasma than with LCD. I know nothing about the LEDs. I think the plasmas are superior to LCD for sports and fast action movies too. It's been a couple of years since I shopped for a TV. Let us know what you learn.

We considered both, but LCD won out. I just couldn't get used to the glare from the plasma sets. Would drive me crazy.

I find the plasmas have a grainy picture due to the larger pixles. I have a LCD 52 inch, but I will probably go for the LED next time

Plasma ain't dead! I haven't had a problem with the glare, even though my living room is bright in the day. I like the wider viewing angle since I have to have the tv kind of "diagonal" in the corner.

I got the plasma because supposedly, it was a little better for sports than the others, and that's generally what I watch. I probably could not tell the difference, really, if I sat down and watched them side by side.

They (who is this "they" anyway?) say that Plasma may have an advantage for 3D viewing for a bunch of indecipherable reasons that they put in the audio and video magazines (which one of my partner's leaves in the men's library at work) with great authority. If that's true, then plasma technology will continue to improve along with all the others.

Plasma is still the way to go----can be had for a MUCH lower price--no fade with fast motion and can be seen at off angles.

I watch from across the room--so don't see any pixels-----the kitchen is at an angle off the family room--so I can still watch football while cooking.

My old tube tv is on its last legs in the bedroom--when it goes--I'll move the 42'' plasma in the bedroom and go shopping for a 50''+ plasma for the family room---I'm hoping I can hold out till march/april when the REAL electronics deals come along.

I've had the 42'' 720p Panasonic plasma for 2 years now--I'm more than happy with it --other than the size--I have 15 foot vaulted ceilings and the 42'' just keeps looking smaller and smaller compared to the large wall space---a 1080p 50'' or larger will replace it as I just got a new bluray player the other day---wireless streaming videos off Netflix is fantastic--I'm seriously considering dumping the cable tv.

I just did some shopping for my mother in law for a new set, so I've been looking at quite a few screens. Personally, I'd have to go with a plasma for "best" picture. Second would be an LED LCD, and third an LCD (she ended up with an LED LCD).

I still think Plasma has the better picture.

I currently have a 50 in. Plasma, and two 42 in. LCD, and I much prefer the picture on the plasma (the MIL's new LED LCD does beat both my LCD's though).

ON EDIT: But what do I know.... I didn't want to give up my Betamax VCR!:D

LED has a better picture then Plasma.

samsung makes a great tv. the problem with plasmas also is that they can burn the screen image onto the screen say if your watching a sports game for a while

That's really only true in the first 100 or so hours of use.

Also notice that many channels have animated logos to remove any burn-in chance.

Newer one's have gone a long way to solving that problem.

All things being equal (1080, contrast etc.) I'd have to disagree (I don't mind the additional power use).

Free to disagree, it is of course a perceptual thing. I will say that LED's have all the capabilities of Plasma, with lower power consumption, thinner, and less heat.

Those are definite advantages of the LED's... I'm amazed how light and thin the thing is! When it comes time to replace one of my LCD's, I'll definitely be looking at the LED's.

iirc, Plasma screens can suffer from rather extreme 'burn-in' in a relativly short time.

You can burn in a plasma -can't imagine how you'd do it with a sports program ? The one's I've seen with burn in have been from two causes :1.) some one froze a frame on a DVD and somehow the DVD stayed that way on a single frame - typically overnight. Always interesting when it's a porn movie! 2.) Compulsive stock market trackers - again if they leave it on overnight they can burn in the banner area.
Unlike CRT's - this problem is not permanent . Have steered several friends into buying dirt cheap "burned in" Plasmas - it takes awhile - but the burn fades with use. If you want to speed up the process - simply tune to a open analog channel and just leave random video noise on the screen anytime you're not using the TV/display. The burn will gradually reduce/fade.
Personally I prefer Plasma over any other flat screen I've seen so far. Having said that the LCD's and LED lighted units get much much better about every model change -look at the difference in picture between a 5 year old unit and todays models - lots less artefacts - blacker blacks -cleaner whites -motion doesn't swim nearly as much.
Being a Ludite - personally I use the and enjoy the last generation of 1080i CRT from LG.
