Plasti-Dip Blades

I have never heard this before.. Is it ona folder or fixed? folder would be a bad idea. Like, very bad. Now if it were a $20 Ontario machete that is rusted to high hell, then It wouldn't be a bad idea. I guess its really down to if you care how the blade looks and if it doesn't lower the cutting performance. What knife are you thinking of dipping?
 
The problem is that it won't last unless you are wanting to dip it a bunch to make a handle. If you have to coat a blade and can't get any normal coatings, some of the spray paints you can get are pretty damn tough. My chose to coat some rotors in Rustoleum and I had to destroy my hand muscles with a wire brush and a scraper to get that stuff off.
 
plasti-dip is pretty thick, and its not really designed to bond in that way as far as I know. Better to do something like the home powder coat or something. Any reason in particular you were thinking this?

Would you care to elaborate with regard to your intended purpose? It is not clear what good it will accomplish. It makes a questionable handle coating and a poor choice for a blade coating unless perhaps you are hoping to seal out moisture during travel or storage (then peal it off before use)...and I'm not confident that it would even serve that purpose well.
 
I have tried plastidip in various thickness on several hand tools. Never tried it on a knife. What I have found is, thinner coats split easily, and thicker coats slip off over time. I think you would probably be successful if the surface had some pretty good "tooth" and some geometry to physically lock it on. Give it a shot, you may figure out a good way to do it.
 
I plastidipped a cord wrapped handle once on a beater kukri style blade.
My nephew uses it to baton thru wood and the handle (so far) has held up well.
