Does a plastic backspacer bother anyone? I know I've read some complaints about them being on $100+ knives, but would a metal spacer provide any extra benefit? Other than some aesthetic improvement like decorative filework or ano, plastic should work as well, no?

Not really. It keeps the weight down and they say certain plastic compounds are as rigid and strong as steel. Now the plastic mainspring housing on my $900.00 Kimber .45 Auto really makes me angry!tom.

Metal spacer looks much nicer. Plastic is just plastic, no matter how strong it is.

It bothers me a little bit, if they used Micarta or some heavier grade material , I'd be fine with it. Mostly I see that crummy polished black plastic.

Tony's idea is great, and that is the way many of the higher end factories did it Circa early 90's.
