Anyone ever done anything like that? I am interested in how to do something like the Benchmade 160, is it possible to coat metal handles with a plastic on a neck knife without a mold?

Looking for something with a grippy texture, any suggestions welcome since i can experiment.

thanks

I thought about this when I made my first batch of neck knives. Thought about trying that tool grip plastic dip stuff but my friends said it wasn't tough enough. Sure would be a nice way to dress up a skeletonized knife plus add some grip to it.I wonder if you could heat form some kydex to the handle and then glue it in place. Then drill out the holes and clean up the edge?

You might try Dupli-Color, or Herculiner. Both are polyurethane bed coatings, for pickups, waterproof and tough. They have bits of rubber or some such for added grip.
They are available at Wal Marts, or auto parts stores.

Do some research on the web for potting compounds. I used to work at the production area for a company that encapsulated the connectors on various wiring harnesses and cable assemblies. We got most of our compounds from a company called THE SMITH GROUP LTD. The salesmans name was Ashley Thomas. Some companys may even send a sample batch for you to experiment with. We accidentally were sent some yellow potting compound once and informed the supplier. They told us just to keep it. We had big fun playing with the stuff. You can also make your own molds out of maple to get the general shape you want for the handle. You could then sand the material to shape and leave it rough and grippy or smooth it out with a solvent.
