I just receive a order from Ellis Custom Knife works today. One item is the 3/4 SS burner flare and the other being the Ceramic Platen Liner.
One question I need to ask you guys.
I have a Coote grinder that has a little use on it.The platent is worn an some what uneven.
My plan is to flip the platent over to the fresh ,unused side. The unused side has a coat of paint on it.
My question is,do I strip ,rough up,or totally remove the paint before applying the platent?
I also want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Ellis for all the help they gave and they're quick and freindly service. They are good people to do business with.

Im not sure how the plate attaches but make sure the worn area keeps it from being aligned properly when you flip if.Might need truing up first.I suggest tacking a piece of 1/8" keystock on the platen to give the cerram some support.JB weld works good to glue it.Just dont clamp it too tight to avoid mashing out all of the JB and breaking the cerram.Darren and Katherine are tops in my book.

Just flatten the platen on a disk grinder, mill, what have you. You can even draw file if you have one long enough. I wouldn't trust the painted side and like was said above, you can't tell what the worn side might do on the backside. If you don't have any of the above, take it to a maker that does and have them do it, or go to a local machine shop . It doesn't have to be precision ground, just flat.

Make sure to round over the top and bottom edges of the pyroceram liner to ease the belt on and off of it. Use 220 then 400, or as close with whatever grits are your favorite. If you use a rough grit and not grind the radius to a finer grit, pieces will chip out and leave striations in the face of it, hence, 220/400.
