For the last several months it seems that just about every photo you see of one of my knives is either the little dress tac, or a hunter, and it's always with the bold temper lines. Once in awhile you'll see a big Bowie. I imagine some folks are starting to wonder if I even make anything else. Admittedly, the bold temper lines have been a hot ticket for me, and the little dress tac personal carry is by far the most popular design I've ever had.

But I do make other things when I can. That's what prompted this post. The one below is a slim, ultra light spear-point. When my wife first saw this one she didn't care for it. She said the thinned out butt of the handle looked like a duck billed platypus.

However, once she started handling it, she changed her tune. She said, "Oh, it really feels good in my hand!". This was just an experiment. I had to have a chance to break out of the mold and do something different. So here's the knife -- code named: Platypus.

This is a 3-1/4" blade forged from 1084, 7-3/8" overall. The hardware is nickel silver, and the handle is Thuya Burl. This little jewel is only about 3/8" wide behind the guard, and tapers down to about 1/8" at the butt.

It is very slim, and was a difficult project even though it has simple looking lines. Imagine doing a mortised tang on something this thin. It's one of those things that makes you hold your breath and clamp your butt cheeks together while you're working on it. :D

Looks great! You say 3/8" at the guard? That's a super slim one. I really wonder how it looks in a top-view.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the compliments.

Falvius, here's a top and bottom shot. I'm just estimating on the thickness. I didn't put calipers on it. Forgive the dirty hands. This was a busy day in the shop. :)

Geez, the blade is almost as thick as the handle. As far as I am concerned, this is a fantastic design. That is a beautiful burl handle as well.

Wow, I love the slim handle. That's what you call dirty hands? You should see my hands after working on a knife (or even worse, after eating chicken wings) :D

great pics Terry..... but dirty hands? I dont remember when my hands were that clean ;)

I get the feeling this knife has to be carried before it can be fully appreciated. With such a low profile I'd imagine it could go just about anywhere quite comfortably.

It most definitely looks nice too. That's some beautiful wood!

Something that thin is highly concealable. You might find a lot of folks interested in a tactical version...

Joss - I was thinking the very same thing.

Terry, if you build it, they will come. Hopefully, I'll be somewhere near the front of the line :D

edited to add: Tactypus! :p :)

Really nice Terry..., and some great looking Thuya..., wow that handle is pretty!!

Good one Wulf. ;) Put a clip in it and call it a Tactypus huh?

H-m-m-m, I was just thinking; if I made one of these with a clip to give it a tactical look, it would be a "test" tactical. So maybe I should call the first one a "Testical". :D BWAH-HA-HA-HA
