For the last several months it seems that just about every photo you see of one of my knives is either the little dress tac, or a hunter, and it's always with the bold temper lines. Once in awhile you'll see a big Bowie. I imagine some folks are starting to wonder if I even make anything else. Admittedly, the bold temper lines have been a hot ticket for me, and the little dress tac personal carry is by far the most popular design I've ever had.
But I do make other things when I can. That's what prompted this post. The one below is a slim, ultra light spear-point. When my wife first saw this one she didn't care for it. She said the thinned out butt of the handle looked like a duck billed platypus.
However, once she started handling it, she changed her tune. She said, "Oh, it really feels good in my hand!". This was just an experiment. I had to have a chance to break out of the mold and do something different. So here's the knife -- code named: Platypus.
This is a 3-1/4" blade forged from 1084, 7-3/8" overall. The hardware is nickel silver, and the handle is Thuya Burl. This little jewel is only about 3/8" wide behind the guard, and tapers down to about 1/8" at the butt.
It is very slim, and was a difficult project even though it has simple looking lines. Imagine doing a mortised tang on something this thin. It's one of those things that makes you hold your breath and clamp your butt cheeks together while you're working on it.
