I have recently been corresponding with a few makers about working with me to design a true custom knife. I have used their time, their design skills, and have already committed to ordering a knife from one of them. But, I'm interested in recommendations of other makers who might be willing to design a working knife with a sense of play, a feel for the unusual, a commitment to wonder.
Note: I am already negotiating/designing with George Tichbourne/Alan Folts/Alan Blackwood. If we reach a good design I will ordere from each of them, so this is a fair deal. I'm not taking one designers ideas and pretending they are my own and passing them on to someone else.
It is important to note that one designer: Lynn Griffith has beenof invaluable help in discussing my requirements and needs and has declined to be the actual knifemaker/designer.
If any knifemakers would like to be part of this project/design experiment I'd love to work with them by sendning my initial thoughts.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Davy

If the design is "way out there" then I'd heartily advise you to speak with Harold Moeller at http://www.horn-net.com/hmoeller/index.html He's done some inredible and creative things (Just ask Jim March).

If it's something creative yet not too far "out there" I'd say contact Jerry Hossom at www.hossom.com I've bounced a couple of ideas off of him before and he's been receptive insofar as my designs were realistic.

I would caution restraint. Let the knifesmith use his own artistic and creative abilities. Just provide a rough framework in which he can work. If you find the 'smith saying something like, well, yep, I can make that for you, the customer is always right, then you are asking for something which is somehow less than optimal. Walt
