The Northeast got blasted with another 18" of snow on Wednesday into Thursday. After shoveling out I was too spent to go to work, so me and a buddy decided to play hooky and go snowshoeing in the woods. I guess I found my second wind somehow.:D

We stayed off trail and sought out the deep stuff.

Here's my buddy breaking trail:

This last round of snow was the wet, heavy kind and he trees were really bending under the weight:

For a big guy, my buddy was very agile on his shoes. Here he is picking his way over some downed trees:

After climbing a bit we went down to a stream and worked our way along it:

Yours truly crossing the stream:

Just truckin' through the woods:

We came across this rock overhang, which looks like it could be good for an improvised shelter. It's about 4' high and the overhang is about 3'.

For the obligatory blade shot I brought along this old Woodman's Pal that I'm trying to restore. It belonged to my friend's grandfather. I've got the edge super sharp, and it is really an awesome chopper:

Did I mention the snow was deep?

Serene looking pics!

I've often found that the best rest for a strenuous activity like shoveling snow... is a strenuous activity like snowshoeing for a couple miles :P

Thank you for the pics of the beautiful scenery :)

Lovin' the snow pics, that looks like a blast. I like playing in it, but wouldn't wanna drive in it  That Woodsman's Pal is great too

Great pictures, much appreciated. Personally I'd rather be walking a trail in any other season but you have to make lemonade if all you have is lemons or something to that effect. My Tubbs are getting a workout here in the northeast.

Great snow pictures. Wish we had more. What kind of shoes does your buddy have? Kinda look like my Redfeathers.

Yup, lemonade. More like lemon slushies.

looks like you guys got a good dump :)

snowshoeing is great exercise and you tend to not have too much for crowds either :D

man looks like you guys had a great time, that woodman's pal has seen a good time also!!!!

Nice pictures Those Beech realy hang onto thier leaves dont they
Nothing like a stomp on the webs to blow off steam from digging snow
AND hooky I remember those days.Always nice to blow a shift or a class to take on a slice of living.
Nice old blade you are rehabing there. Some type of billhook, never tried those, would like to one of these times we rarely see then up this way

Those are great pics. It looks like the snow we have here in MN. I just got some snowshoes in the mail last night, so I hope to be doing the same thing soon ;)

Those are some motivating pictures

I should be waking up to 25cm in the morning and might have to make an outing myself

Thanks for posting!

The Woodman's Pal had definitely seen a ton of use before I got my hands on it. So far I've removed a bunch of rust and put a good edge on it. The amazing thing is that before I redid the edge, which was nonexistent, it still chopped reasonably well. Now it lives up to its looks and, just like you would expect, chops like a beast.

The Beech trees do keep a lot of leaves through winter, and they make good tinder if they are dry, but we didn't make a fire because we were having too much fun just tromping through the snow.
