I have a small collection of Buck Vantages and 300 series knives, but until yesterday, no fixed blades. I'm a 54 year old woman who goes fishing from time to time, but I'm not into camping, so I haven't had much interest in them.

Well, yesterday I was at the big box store and as usual, had to look at the meager knife display and this 620 Reaper caught my eye. It's a bit "tactical" for my tastes, what with the truck-bed liner coating, but I like the Dymondwood scales. It fit my hand nicely and I like the slight downward angle of the blade. What can I say, I made an impulse purchase. :D

I have a stand of bamboo at the back fence of my backyard, and it's a constant battle to keep it from taking over the yard. I use loppers and sometimes a machete for most of it. Unfortunately I let it get away from me this year, and it's really overgrown along with weeds and wisteria. I knew I needed to get out there this weekend and at least clear the new combs out and I felt that a new toy might make the job a bit more fun. :)

It's not exactly bushcraft, but I cleared a good amount. The Reaper did a nice job. Bamboo contains silica, so it's hard on knife edges and I didn't expect the 420hc to hold up as well as it did. The edge is a bit dull now, but there are no chips or much rolling, so it should be easy to touch it up.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share. Anyone else use their Bucks for yardwork?

 Great post and nice knife Rachel.

I don't have to worry about impulse purchases when at the big stores. Around here, their selection is atrocious. Asside from Buck 110's and Victorinoc Classics and Campers, there is only the usual blister packed, TV-show-of-the-month endorsed offerings.

I've used a 110 and a Bantam 285 for some light trimming or opening bags of fertalizer, soil or bug stuff but nothing heavy.

Nice little review Rachel! If I were to use one of my 112s for that it wouldn't be the 30V one(a 112 would be the wrong tool anyway). Buck's 420HC is plenty tough!

Nice back yard. How many hectares (or squares) do you have?

Good looking knife, too.

Thanks. I'm not sure how big a hectare is, but it's just a regular sized urban backyard. Maybe 40 by 50 feet? Not real big, unless it's overgrown with bamboo that needs clearing. :D

Hectare = 100 acres = amount of land I dream about having in the hill country someday but will almost certainly will never have. :D

I like the Buck R8Shell. That is a rally nice looking blade. We had bamboo in or back yard initially when we built the house but it got totally out of control and started bleeding over to one of our neighbors. Last year I pulled it all out. And then it came back,so rinse and repeat. I think it s finally all gone.
