A client wanted a pirate theamed mini cleaver, so i had to play around with copper a bit. It turned quite heavy, but there is something special in the material...

There is no appropriate manner to describe that blade as anything less than absolutely stunning. Excellent work!

I imagine the copper will naturally patina over time and use as well?

Thank you, friend! This was truly my first try. I had two old coins from the client to make the design. Could have been better, but there is always tomorrow! How i made the scales - they are crafted from 3 mm solid copper. I drew the design with a metal marker and etched them in ferric chloride for around 30 min. After that i cleaned them and soaked them in vinegar and salt. I left them in a closed jar with some ammonia for 24 hrs. They turned cobalt blue from the ammonia and jade green from the salt. The patina is very fragile and needs to be handled with care or it will rub off. I left it to dry and rubbed the patina with fine sandpaper on the places i wanted the design to show. After that i covered it with resin to preserve it. The oxides of copper are poisonous and need to be separated from your food and hands.

That turned out real nice for first use of copper. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing
Mitch
