Hi all,

Instead of getting some work done, I spent some time this afternoon playing with MS Paint and doodled up this little concept. It was my first time using the program and I realize that the Hole isn't quite round and hasn't been placed properly and neither has the pivot pin -- but you get the idea. For this concept the blade length is 3.9" and all other dimensions are relative.

Haven't thought of a proper name for it yet, so I'm just calling it "Zero One."

Thanks guys,

I've slightly refined the original version here by fixing the Hole, adding the flat grind line and a choil, and reversing some colours. Some have raised the issue of tip strength due to the clip point which has been dropped below the centerline and swedged. So I made a new version with the same full-flat grind and no swedge.

Any thoughts?

hi Carlos. interesting concept. Welcome to the world of knife design. The more you learn, the harder it gets.

Excuse me Sal,
but this is what right now I would like to find from Spyderco, and I think this is the same for other people....here is not a matter of design only, but of rough, strong funcionality.

Hi Sal,

Welcome back. Is it just me, or is the hardest part of the "paper" design getting the handle shape right? I've been trying to think of some way to produce handle mock-ups to test small changes to the shape.

BTW, I wanted to ask you if there is a list available of custom makers authorized to use the Hole. I've been thinking about setting aside some money next year to try and have a prototype made.

Mario,

Thanks for the compliment. The blade and some of the handle design are inspired by many old Military designs -- from World War-era bayonets, to current US Navy "Mark" series combat knives, and the current combat knives of Germany. It does have a "rough" and "functional" look, and I'd like to see how it performs in the real world.

Hi Carlos,
go on also with a "bad" tanto blade, and be sure I'll be a customer of yours if you succed with some authorized knifemaker.

Hi Mario,

Here is an "Aikuchi" variant that I made up a while back. Unlike every other tanto folder, it has the traditional flat grind and curved belly. For now it still has the other prototype's handle, but I'll give it a unique one later:
