Playing with pararcord and a "good idea?

Hey all,

In case anyone is wondering I'm mostly able to get online at night for the next few weeks, staying up late because of a few things going on at the moment, anyway, that means I've got some free time I try to fill with various (quite) versions of our hobby while the kids sleep, like lanyards.

Never got much of a kick out of them myself but I have found working with paracord very therapeutic before now and I am enjoying it again.

So, I'm not that good FYI, but I make them serviceable, it passes the time, relaxes me etc

I do the following knots:

-Barnacle knot
-Rattlesnake fob
-The ranger bead lots of outdoors folks seem to like. (very easy to do, ard to make look bad, I'm a fan, plus you ca push it up and down when bored, like flipping a folder)

Barnacle being used to hold a jk firesteel - don't know how re-usable this is yet, FYI

I forget what this ones called but i like it for a quick pull toggle or just a "help find" for saks and things

the more I think about it the more I think this isn't a good idea but there have been lots of kind and selfless gestures going on around here (and I imagine have been for a long time) and thought I'd try to give back as they say.

Anyway, I've had a few ideas of things to do for and with the forum but i'm really holding off until I have money to put where my mouth is, so I had a new one just for kicks.

Now an idea tends to get stuck in my head quickly on account of it's got a lot of room to make a home in up there, and I don't always think things through because of it so i was wondering if you guys would be interested, or be willing to tell me how silly it is.

Is it of any use to offer free landyards to Jk fans? (or anyone with a knife order ?) My idea is that if you want a landyard and you could get it to me, I'd put one on and send it back, simple as.

But then i got to thinking why would you do that when you could probably do it yourself without the burden of shipping? then I saw some people complaining about having to do it and not enjoying etc, then i thought why would they trust me with their knife? then I thought you're really not smart enough to decide if this is a stupid idea.

So I'd appreciate it if you guys'd tell me, yay or nay? or just look at the hopefully pretty pictures, thats what I'd do. :p

hope your all well

Almost forgot to show you some pretty pictures, I've borrowed my wife's camera for all of the above shots which is why they are a cut above my usual offerings, but here's a few examples of what she's able to do with this thing, kind makes me feel like an untalented idiot, but I've got used to that feeling being married to Rebecca :p

Like seeing what a lot of your guys are capable of here on the forum for that matter

It sounds like a generous offer to me. As you mentioned, the guys that hang out here often do things that are very generous.

Class act man! That's incredibly generous of you, and I'm sure many here will take you up on it if you do offer it! With regards to trusting you with their knives, of all the forums and subforums I'm on, I find the regulars in jk's to be the most genuine, honest and trustworthy. I don't think anyone here would question that. Good on ya ky, I hope you get everything you deserve in this lifetime!

Love the family photos! Has the look and feel of summer! I would trust you! I mean, you could never hide with all the photos of your knife we have, we could just start checking people's pocket knives and compare if you skipped out on us! I agree with Spyder, the people here are very genuine. I remember barely being here on the forum and asking a question about a knife when someone offered to send me theres for a while to play with to see if i liked it! I have also tried the paracord thing and found some good uses. I personally, don't wear a survival bracelet, or any bracelet for that matter, but if I make one out of paracord and fast buckle clips, then I attach the key chain to clip to loop on my waterbottle to my backpack so I wont loose it no matter what the circumstances on transport, etc. Also They make a good key chains that you can clip in and still "smush down" technical term to fit in your pocket. I agree, i find it mindless, but enjoyable. Take care

Hi KYe -

If you are having a good time and want to do it, then it's a great idea!

I really like the rattlesnake lanyard - I have a similar one on my JK Ti folder that Mr. Sogetsu made (and gave as gifts to us lucky supporters who attended a gathering).

I like your idea of a paracord accessory for the firesteel - good idea!

Nice work - I have not been able to figure out how to knot that stuff up -

Good point, and thanks. I think every knife sale on here takes some trust after all

Ha, just, ha, that brightened up my night, kinda like a man version of a glass lipper or something. I don't wear survival brackets either but have tried making one or two to pass the time, as you say, mindless, but that's sometimes just what you need to enjoy yourself, to switch off for while I guess.

Very cool offer.

BTW - love the pics. Especially the pic of your youngest walking the tracks. That one is awesome.

it's the eldest on the tracks, But I agree, it's a great shot, my little buddy!

I've seen that one, he's a little beyond what I can do, sounds like a seriously nice gesture of him. Thanks.

Thanks again for the warm comments,

here's some pictures (warts and all as they say) of the other color I have, it sits in my day hike bag so far unused but for messing around like this,

I was thinking of cost, and some of them like the ranger bead, can be taken off and put back on fairly easy, which would me it would only cast whatever it takes to mail a small envelop in the US, like a $1 I think?

steps:

Pull in all 4 directions to get some leeway
103_9587.JPG

Remove, and then loop through your landyard hole/keys/pacifier :p
103_9588.JPG

reinsert (I found that even if it's tight you can kinda twist it on in a few seconds)

Boom :p

Okay, going to take some and start another thread, figure I can send them in a small envelop for a buck or less so long as you ll don' mind attaching them yourselves, should anyone take i up that is

:p

Hi KYe -

Just an idea to peruse -

Maybe you send a few of these to John and have him include them in knives that he sends out - that way you save the buck shipping each one individually, and it is a nice little addition to the knives John is shipping out to us -

The LRK special run might be a good choice for these - I would proudly display one on my upcoming LRK - ;^)

Very nice gesture on your part, my good man!

I know I`d like one for my Keychain Companion, so if you decide to do it, count me in.

Those look pretty nice! I can't really do a whole lot with paracord yet, but after seeing how cool these are, I'll have to start practicing.

He! great minds think alike, or at least I had the same thought as your great mind :p, if Jk was up for it I was hoping to send some his way for just that purpose

Sure will, I'm planing on making some over the next few nights and then I'l post about. Also could I just send a few your way anyway as Mqqn just suggested? You could include them at your own discretion but I think I could have some to you before a lot of those LRK orders are filled if thats a good idea?

I'm really digging the one with the firesteel. very cool idea.

Only problem with that on is I kinda need the firesteel to get it set up, like I say not sure it will hold up to too many "uses" 9pulling it in and out) but I think it did come out kinda well, thanks :D

I've got some youtube links that have helped me out no end if you need the, :p

To start with I'm going to make a standard set of ranger beads since there my new thing to play with, of course I'd run out of paracord pretty fast if I made 12 inch landyards but I think I can do a serviceable size, then maybe some rattlesnake ones since I think they'll transport well

Thanks for all the comments and confidence, I'l try to make some nice ones for you guys

Good stuff! And I like the sig line by P.G. Wodehouse- he created Jeeves and Wooster, two of my fav characters!

things got a bit weird here towards the end and I ended up playing with the barnacle knot, don't know how his would attach to anything now it's already tied or what you'd attach it t but think it looks kinda cool :p
