Playstation 3 blueray problem

I rented a blueray movie and went to watch it on my ps3. When I put the disc in it has a thing that says "renew encryption key". From the research I've done, it has to be done through Ps3 online. I do not have an internet router at my house, I piggyback my neighbors internet.

Am I out the money I spent to rent the blueray? What is the point of all of this? Why can't I just watch movies on a couple hundred dollar machine I bought to play bluerays on. I'm not a gamer, I use my ps3 for movies ...and now I can't watch them because I can't renew my "encryption key" -whatever the heck that is. Is their any way to get past this without going Ps3 online?

any advice?

I have a PS3 as well and have never encountered this problem. Ever! Is this a first time occurence?

I just read the manual on the Official site and all it said is you have to update your system software to the latest version. Then it will be automatically renewed. So in other words...you need to ride that piggy! Or get a flash drive.

PM Incoming btw...

Yes this is the first time this has happened. I used to be able to play blueray all the time, and tonight it says I need to "renew" something. I googled it and people have had this problem before, but the only answer is to either get online and renew it, or buy a flash drive and do it that way. I'm wondering if there is a way I don't have to spend more money to watch blueray discs on something that I allready payed for to watch bluerays on.

Happens to my friend all the time, the slim ps3 has a recall on the blueray. I have the original ps3. I got when they first came out for 600 dollars and it runs like a clock.

All you have to do is sign in to whatever internet that you are using right now and update your system, not a big deal.

Thanks guys for your help.

After spending several hundred dollars on the ps3 to play blueray, I had to spend another $10 on a USB flash drive. Doesn't sound like much, but after spending around $299 for something to play bluerays (because I was told it was the best blueray player) ..the ten bucks for the flash, plus the gas to go buy the flash drive, and the time spent calling playstation customer service, memorex customer service to learn how to format the flash to FAT32 on mac... it is kind of ridiculous.

I got it to work after a big headache.

once again, thank you all for your help.
BF is a great place

I just went to Bestbuy and bought a blueray player for $99. It is already set-up for wireless and I stream Netflix & Pandora directly.

Don't know where you heard the PS3 was the "best" Blueray player as it just uses a chip available for all players, and picture clarity is a function of the HD TV.

edit: (I read your post wrong) Yeah, I was told the PS3 was best because not only did it have a great picture with the hdmi cable, if I wanted to do other stuff with it in the future, i.e. play games ..I would have that option.

all you had to do was update your ps3

Yeah, but without online capability I had to spend the time to go get a flash drive, than learn how to format it. Being pretty computer illiterate, dealing with people on the phone to format the flash drive was a pain.

My $100 LG Blu-ray player (network, not Wi-fi) does all that stuff, and looks great playing Blu-rays, but frankly, the upconversion capabilities for regular DVDs is quite awful, and the wider the aspect ratio (ie: Lord of the Rings), the worse it gets. I've seen regular DVDs on a couple peoples' PS3s, and they look fine. And playing them on my laptop's Blu-ray drive looks fine too. An inexpensive Blu-ray player just doesn't have the power, I guess. So there is a reason to get a PS3 over a regular BR player, even if you're not a gamer.

Other blu-ray players will also need an update from time to time, that's why all the ones I have are on the network. I had 2 Samsungs that needed updates shortly after I got them, and since I also use them for Netflix, being on the network solved that. I also use my PS3 just to play blu-ray DVDs, I just update it as needed.
