Looking for a new gaming system. It is between these two. They are both about the same price. Which would you choose and why?

X-box. The PSII has so many problems I can't list them. If you leave a disc in the system, it voids your warranty. You have to pay 129 bucks to get even a minor problem fixed, that is if you are the unlucky 1/5 who have had to send theirs back. Then you will have to buy the X-box for entetainment purposes while you wait, because it takes about 3 months for them to get your system back to you.

Carl, out of curiosity, how can leaving a disk in the PS2 void the warranty?
What other problems are there with the PS2?

I have a PS2 and have had no problems with it. The biggest problem is that I don't think the games for it are all that spectacular. The recent PSX have really appealed to me.

I haven't been impressed with the Xbox games either.

Presently, I am coveting a Gamecube as Rogue Leader is awesome. I go to Circuit City at lunch all the time just to play it. Smash Bros. is pretty cool too.

Void the warranty by leaving the disk in the ps2... how is that possible??

My personal oppinion is: everthing that _isn't_ micro$oft is good! :)

Here is the link listing all of the reviews(so positive and some not so positive). My friend has one, he has two games for it, I think he said Metal Gear Solid and Rainbow Six. Anyway, he had a few little problems with it, but they are now resolved. It is fun to play, no doubt about it(I like those kind of games). I just cannot justify buying one due to the relatively high percentage of messed up systems being bought. Only time will tell if his system meets the same fate as others.

I have a PS2 and have had no problems with it. My daughter has about 8 games, and I have 4 or 5 sports (EA Sports) related games. All these are excellent.

Microsoft has really improved Windows for the X-box. The blue screen of death has been eliminated! ...and replaced with a green screen of death. :barf:

I'd much rather have a Gamecube or PS2. Of course, I'd also rather have an Atari 2600. ;)

Mobile Monitor For the Gamecube seriously appeals to my Gadget Guy... but frankly, you play these systems for THE GAMES. Why don't you share some of the games/genres you like so we can recommend a few titles along with a system? Right now, I'm plenty happy with my recently purchased PS2 (mainly for GTA3 and Victorious Boxers) and I find it hard to justify buying an X-box... maybe once their library opens up a little bit. But then I'm mainly a PC gamer anyways.

Just bought a PS2. One problem only (so far) it´s the cooling fan... it sounds too much when I´m watching DVD´s.

It seems like there might also be a problem with lipmovements not totally in sync with the sound at all times. Could it be that Sony made the sound go through some kind of internal memory that in some way affect the sound?

Anyone else experience the same with their PS2´s?

I read a report showing that Microsoft is losing about $100 on each console sold. So I went out and bought one yesterday and put it under the tree. Told the wife it was for the kids;)

I have had a Playstation 2 since May of this year. The only problems we have had is with two DVD movies that were bad. All the other DVDs and the games play great. I do like that you can play the PS1 games. The main reason we got the PS2 was game selection. It is nice only having to spend $10-$20 for a PS1 game when you don't want to spend $50 at the time. Although, Costco has PS2 games right now at $18.99 and $26.99. Bought about 5 of them.

Southpaw -- I think Sony is probably losing money on the PS2 sales as well. It's a frequent tactic -- they then try to make it up in software, extra controllers, etc.

So how do you like the Xbox!?

Reasons to buy PS2 over XBox:

1. GAMES!! There are tons of native PS2 titles plus hundreds of great PS1 titles that you can play on the PS2. I've seen awesome PS1 games selling for like $25 Canadian these days. There are what, a dozen titles out for XBox as of right now?
2. With a mod-chip and a computer you can burn backup copies :) of your games so that when you scratch the original CD you are not SOL...
3. It's not Micro$oft. Micro$oft must be destroyed.
4. You can run Linux on the PS2!!!
5. Grand Theft Auto III.

The XBox is basically a Windows based Pentium 3 computer with closed hardware. Whoopity dooo! My PC is a 1.2 Ghz Athlon with a 64MB GeForce 2 video card. Many games that will be coming out for XBox already exist for the PC, and will probably run faster on my computer so why would I buy an XBox?

Yeah, whatever man. I have the PS2, and I have had no problems whatsoever. I don't have a lot of games for the PS2 specifically -- only the great ones like Gran Turismo 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2. In fact, my copy of Final Fantasy X is in the capable hands of FedEx as I write.

Is having three PS2 games insufficient? Nope, because I play all my PS1 games on it as well. Does the XBox have access to literally hundreds of games? I think not.

It's fine to prefer the XBox due to the "graphics", "sound", "games available" or whatever. Those are legitimate qualities. Don't just trash the other options just because you "heard" there were "problems".

With 6.5 million PS2 units sold in the USA alone, it's a pretty damn good console.

I have not been impressed with the XBox graphics at all. And right now, game selection is practically nil. I have a feeling that the XBox is going to go the way of the 3DO, Jaguar, and the Dreamcast. As far as problems with PS2, I noticed in MGS2, the first movie had no sound. That's the only glitch I've seen. Costing $129 to get a PS2 fixed? I don't doubt that for a second. I know of a couple of people that had to send in their PS1's for repair, and it cost them $75, about 3/4 of what they paid for them.

I bought a PS2 specifically becuase I've had a PS1 for some time, and a system that plays the old games seemed attractive. I also wanted to be able to continue with the sequels to several of my favorite PS1 games, like Resident Evil (I could have bought a Dreamcast, I guess, for Code: Veronica, but it's looking like the Dreamcast is headed for "dead system" territory), Metal Gear Solid, and Silent Hill. Devil May Cry is another excellent game for the PS2, and I've been enjoying Max Payne (though I'm told it's better on the PC).

I have had no problems with my PS2, though I've read reports that using the vertical holder can "scramble the video card," however that is supposed to happen. The cooling fan is indeed too loud. The RF adapter I purchased to plug the machine into the TV's cable inlet absolutely sucked; the sound was full of static and the picture had interference. I overcame this diffculty by plugging the direct feeds from the PS2 into the corresponding color-coded sound and video jacks in my VCR. (As a result, my VCR must be on for me to see the feed from the PS2.)

The DVD feature of the PS2 is mediocre at best, and the machine comes with no remote. This, too, can be overcome, however; the lovely Mrs. Razor bought me an official Sony PS2 remote. I've been told the early ones had some bugs, but this later version comes complete with IR receiver (which must remain plugged into one of the control jacks -- a disadvantage if you play multiplayer games) and a CD-ROM of software that must be copied to the memory card. The software contains drivers that eliminate some of the PS2's DVD-problems (which include imprecise chapter skipping and a general twitchiness to the menu controls).

So all in all the system has not been perfect, but none of the problems have been catastrophic. I have a DVD player, I can play cool games, I can play my old PS1 games without using the old PS1, and I'm generally pretty happy with it all.
