The first reason that comes to mind is for example,
If you're talking about Benchmade AFCKs,
are you talking about an 800HSSR or an 800SBT?
Model numbers are much easier to type than full descriptions of blade specs, liner material, coatings, serrations, blade material, etc.

I'd have to agree on this one. That code says a mouthful about the knife. I can see how it can be hard to keep up with it, though some BM models don't even have a name really, like the 710, the 705, the 720, etc., except for being the "..." axis model.

I truly hope we're not insulting any makers with our BM jargon, however! Never really thought of it that way.

Although Model numbers tell Brand Enthusiasts a great deal they can leave others confused.

Therefore I would encourage using both Model Numbers and Names when posting here.

I developed a tremendous appreciation for the need for more than Model Numbers when I spent some time talking to a Case enthusiast.

Well, on the Nimravus, I usually will post the model (140HS, for example), then refer to it by name. The 705 is just the 705, there isn't a real name. Same goes for the 710. The 730 Ares, I usually just call '730' due to a controversy about the name. Those are the only BMs I refer to on a regular basis, so I don't have any 'normal' way of talking about the others.

I just say the numbers and product code because it gives more description than the name. For example, if I said Stryker, it wouldn't tell you whether the knife was a 910S or 910BT or just the plain edged satin finish 910. If I said BM 910SBT, you know that it is the Stryker with BT2 and a combination edge.

The best comparisons are BMW's fine automobiles. There are no names, just model numbers that tell the tale...

MDP, if I were to say the "Benchmade Pardue" or "Benchmade Elishewitz" without including a model number you would have a hard time telling just which knife I was referring to. And if I have to keep typing "Elishewitz" all the time I'll develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The model numbers may be more descriptive, but only IF you have them all memorized. I don't have time to sit around and remember the model numbers for every company, and I am not a Benchmade fan (though I would like the new Osbourne BM45908237u589272-395). Besides numbers are for engineering types. They lack the creativity to come up with new names.

I don't really care what anybody else calls them, I'll still keep doing the same thing...ignoring threads about numbers...

Posting either model numbers or names doesn't matter unless you know what the knife is in the first place! If I say BM875 or Sentinel and you don't know what either refers to, it doesn't really matter which I use does it! Both should lead people to go to Benchmade's site to check it out at least.

I wonder, Marion, why are you asking this? I don't mean to ask this in any negative way at all, I am just curious. Why do YOU want people to refer to benchmade knives by name as opposed to number?

I always use a specific model number when I need to be clear which model I am talking about. If I am talking about a series (AFCK, Stryker...) then I use the name.

The best way to understand the question is to consider a true and very serious story of tremendous import and significance for us all.
A man was at a convention center when he walked by a room full of people laughing. He looked in and there was a man at the lecturn calling out numbers, followed by uprorious laughter. "143": laughter. "352j": howls.
So he asked one fellow near the door what ws up? "Oh, we're all jokewriters. We've heard all the jokes so many times we just refer to them by number" So he asked if he could get up and tell a joke. "Sure". Up he went.
He called out: "37", nothing. "546":silence a Rockwell painting out there. Shaken, he got down off the lecturn and asked the same man what why noone was laughing at either joke. He explained: "You told it wrong"

The model numbers actually are the most precise way to identify the models, including whether there are serrations, whether there is a coating, etc. If you say a Benchmade "Pardue", are you talking about a Gent's or a tactical? Which one? By the time you specify it in words, you regret having brought it up in the first place, much like this post

I can understand where you are coming from, when I see a number that I don't know, it provides the purpose to travel all the way to the Benchmade site and look it up, fun way of learning and seeing whats new.

But my favorite Benchmade's don't have names. We must call 'em the Model 45 or the Model 42. And the model numbers do get specific such as the 42AS. I know exactly what that one looks like.

Really, no one says SPYDERCO C36 instead of Military although it also comes in some different versions (plain or serrated, CPM440V or ATS-34)

Why should we name BENCHMADE knives by numbers if they have their own names? Another thing if they have not names like McHenry & Williams model 710 Axis Lock - cool knife but a bit too long name, think BM should do something with it

And what the problem to specify the particular version of each knife with words, not numbers and symbols? My BM AFCK for ex. has plain non-coated blade in ATS-34 - it is as simply as my SPYDERCO Military has plain blade in CPM440V.

I like the numbers a little more than names when talking about BM. I guess that is because thay make so many varieties of one knife - and other companies (for example Spyderco) do not (only coating the blade doubles the number)....

But I do not really care as long as I have a good reference place to visit. The Spyderco.com is such a place, the Benchmade.com is NOT (for example).
