Went camping with the familia for 4 days. State park camping, hiking, fishing (no fish). Good times. I was ready: I had a SAK Farmer, an Opinal, a Buck Vantage Pro (in case I wanted a one hander, (in a pinch, because I was going SAK). Fixed blade, I had a Spyderco Shemp Tuf, a Bradsaw Custom, and a BK10. Ready for business. Threw in a Mora in the picnic basket, for her, and a little Boker Fisk belt knife, little and easy to carry. Oh, and a BK14 around the neck! Like I said, I was ready....

4 days, a bunch of camp chores, fishing gear trimming stuff, some whittling. Great time for using everything! BUT....

2 knives saw life. Only 2. Not due to lack of love for every other knife. Just that 2 knives fit the bill so well.

The Mora, and the Buck Vantage Pro. Who knew? Simple, basic, and flawlessly. From whittling sticks, slicing and chopping food (tomatoes see through thin, potatoes chip thin, onions perfect thin circles, etc). Everything (except chopping wood. Gerber, aka Fiskars, hatchet. Wood is meant for axes and hatchets).

What Happened??? I found out that a good all purpose fixed blade, and one good folder works. Perfectly.

This revelation happen to anyone else?

I like the mix of a medium to large fixed blade, small fixed blade, and a swiss army knife. That combo is ready for anything.

Sounds like you had a fun time.I usually bring only one fixed blade and one folder when I go camping.I try to enjoy the two knife that I have.If I have more than two , then I tend to have concerns about keeping track of them all and where I stash them in my gear.I try to keep it simple when traveling and that works for me.My last camping/fishing trip I took my GSO 4.1 and a Spyderco Miltary. The fixed blade worked great for the camp chores and the Mili cleaned all the trout like a laser.I will head back to the same secret spot next weekend to finish the summer on a nice note.

Yep. Big knife/little knife - it's a classic combo.

I never take more than 2. Any more than that and the others feel left out because they don't get used.

Not surprised that you only needed a couple, but you certainly were prepared. Beats the alternative; glad they worked for you.

I had all the choices that seemed reasonable for use in a State Park. I thought for sure I'd be busting out a big boy blade over the Mora, but the little bugger just outworks it's size every time. Were I chopping some poles, I suspect the Bradshaw SAR and and BK10. I was shocked how little I used my BK14. It got a bit heavy of the neck. It might have hit the belt again. I use it like crazy at home.

Not surprised at all. I bring multiple knives when camping just to play with. Most of the time 2 of them get the most use.

Yeah I learned that as a kid when I discovered the combination of leuku and puukko for the wild. Still my goto combination for when it's gonna be rough.

Sounds like you've confirmed that we're all crazy and could get by just fine with a couple knives if we wanted to...
