My wife now carries a flashlight in her purse and likes it (a Nuwai Q-III). But she is not a "flashlight person."

So I asked her about a knife and she wouldn't mind carrying one in her purse. I think it will prove useful one of these days. But she is not a "knife person."

What knife do you suggest?

1. it has to be no-maintenance and not mind being jammed in a purse

2. cute would be good but not necessary

3. very easy to open and close

4. locking -- no slipjoints

5. budget - whatever is needed, I am hoping for under $100 in any event.

Thanks for your suggestions

Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. They even make them in "cute" colors. If you wanted to spend a little more, I got my wife a Benchmade 690. It's a great size, 154CM steel and the wood/carbon handle looks good.

The women I know all seem to love Spydercos. That's pretty much all my wife carries.

I would recommend the Persian or Mini Persian with the Kiwi as a runner-up. Other contenders are the Navigator, Poliwog, and Cricket.

My vote goes for the spyderco cricket. Even better if you could spend another $50 to have some wood scales applied by somebody. Makes even cuter.

I have a small green serrated Spyderco Ladybug on my key ring. I never plan on using it but do all the time. It is a good little cutter, easy to carry, and rarely needs to be resharpened.

Here is a link to more info about it.

Spyderco also makes a Ladybug with a builtin flash light.

I say a Moki knife. do a search. The mother pearl with apple jewel, a checkers, and sea shell. These pretty, fantastic knives doesn't come in cheap.

Like any other Japanese products, Moki knife come with the most beautiful packaging i had ever own. A gift for a lady is the most ideal.

you are not buying just a knife, you are buying a style!! I am sure it will goes with any shoe she puts on. A woman use a Moki, wow, that is sexy.

I'd also suggest one of the colored Benchmade Mini-Griptilians...Maybe a yellow or blue one.

I'll recommend a Mini-Griptilian as well. Lots of cute colors to pick from, good steel, great lock, fairly indestructable handle, and a choice between thumbstud and hole opening. I gave a blue one to my girlfriend a few months ago and it has held up well while being buried in the bottom of her purse.

I'd go for the Spyderco Ladybug or Jester. They're easy to open with longer nails, they're light enough to carry without noticing and they're easy to maintain. My wife carries a Jester. She's not a knife person either but she must use it; I have to clean and sharpen it every couple of months.

A Benchmade Mini-Grip would be a nice choice, though I really think a Victorinix Tinker for the purse and a Victorinox Rambler for her keychain would be a nice combination. My personal experience is that locks for non-knife folks can sometimes cause problems, I'm not saying non-knife folks are dumb or anything like that. Just that they seem to have problems with them sometimes, and if the knife is sharp they could cut themselves.

The mini-grip is nice, and because it's not a particularly thick blade they are nice slicers and do nice work on cardboard, letters, etc. At least my Cabelas D2 mini-grip does.

Let me add as well that the suggestion of a Jester is a good one, small and lockable. But being small it's still an easy knife to actually open easily one handed and the blade has plenty of edge for small day to day tasks. That would be my second choice for a keychain knife. I just like the overall utility of the Vic Rambler a little more.

My best advise to you is to get her a knife that she'll be able to attach to her keyring, like a Jester. If she's a non-knife person, she won't remember to dig in her purse for a knife, but if it's on her keyring, she'll know exactly where it is all time. Trust me on this.

I bought my wife a pink Spyderco jester and she loves it. I've asked her if she wants something more substantial . . or a nice swiss army knife with a cork screw and scissors, but she's not interested. The Jester does just fine by her. She likes the color and the ridges that allow her to choke up on the blade for detail work.

She also liked the look of the Blade Tech Mouse 2. That also has the ridges. Maybe that's what she likes - a knife that's handy for craftwork.

A.G. Russell mini lockback, perfect,w/one of thier leather pouches, classy!

Out of all the suggestions here, this one is absolutely right on the mark. Persian or Mini Persian. Cricket and Ladybug are... well, just too small. And what's with "cute"? Wouldn't useful and functional be a critereon of a little more, er... integrity? Another question... why do manufacturers think women want bright colors? Black is cool, minimal, elegant, and easily concealed (enough already with the lavendar and yellow). A woman does not want attention going to 'that bright thingy' in her purse.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Cricket and Ladybug - but the Mini Persian would be a lovely gift and far more useful.
and this is a skirt talking.

I bought my gf a full-sized sheepsfoot Griptillian with the thumbhole opening and axis lock. She loves it (and I love her :D ) and the way she wears it along the small of her back alongside her thong....  :D

How about a Kershaw Rainbow Leek? assisted opening so she doesn't have to fuss with opening it or bust a nail, framelock and a nice hard titanium finish. All metal, slim and light too so purse is no problem either.

My wife was volunteering at a convent most of the summer, ended up peeling a lot of pears and apples from their orchard. Finally gave me a reason to buy her a knife. So I got her a Spyderco Dragonfly. Very pleased. The real stamp of approval, though, was that the nuns like it... "It's cute, it looks like a fish." :D
