I confess to knowing close to Zero about traditional folders. I was wondering if there is such a thing as a large, single blade folder. If so, what are the different types referred to as? Example: I think one thing I have in mind is called a "Toothpick" but not sure if this is right. Are there others? What are some of the well known brands which have this kind of model in their lineup? Only one I know of is Case XX.

Thanks all.

Toothpick, Texas Toothpick, Daddy Barlow, Granddaddy Barlow are all large (5+ inches closed) single-blade folders (slipjoint). Case, Queen, Schatt & Morgan (Queen-made) are makers that've offered some or all of these patterns. The toothpick has also been a mainstay for some of the German Brands, such as Eye Brand, Boker, Hen & Rooster.

Sodbuster!

You can get some by Case, Kissing Krane, Eye-Brand, Bear, F.Herder, and some old Henckels if you cruise the bay. Very old design going back well over a century or two in eastern Europe.

There's also the French made Lagioule type of knives, as well as the larger Opinels and Douk-Douk's.

Queen makes a Toothpick with a 5 inch handle.

I have seen some Case knives that I believe are called "Bulldog", "Buffalo", or "Clasp" knives. Not sure of the size but they are large.

Great Eastern Cutlery has the #23 patterns that are 4 1/2 inches closed.

I'm sure there are more but that is all that comes to mind at the moment.

Wow Thanks guys! I am going to check into these. It is always a pleasure for me to look at a category of knives which are new to me.

Carl I just noticed you are in Germantown! What a small world:) I'm in Frederick.

Check out A.G. Russell too.

Large Folding Hunter
Texas Ranger Sunfish
Sowbelly Trapper (I think A.G. has a single blade version in the works. Due out in a couple months)

If you don't need a knife quite as big as a large Toothpick there are also the large Sodbusters made by a few different companies. Another option in the 4 1/2" size would be a Queen Mountain Man, available in either a slip joint or lockback. If you want something even bigger than the Toothpick, Queen makes a single blade Folding Hunter which is a whopping 5 1/4".

My three favorite large single blades - Queen Mountain Man, S&M F&W Mountain Man, S&M F&W Saddlehorn Lockback.

Don't forget the Schrade OT's, is 125OT the single blade model? My 25 OT has two blades but I know they made a one bladed version.

The Case Back Pocket is a large single blade knife and the Case/Bose Tribal Spear is also pretty good size. Ed J

Canal Street Cutlery makes this one. Its big - 5 1/4 closed! Comes with a leather sheath.

Case makes their large folding Hunter in a single blade version that looks pretty spiffy (5 1/4" closed):

Speaking of the Douk-Douk. Picked this one up from Garret Wade for $26 + shipping. It's their large Douk-Douk, 3 1/8" blade. They also offer a "small" version, 2.5" for $20 or the pair for $40. More or less bought it as a lark but I have to say I'm not at all disappointed. The blade is 3mm thick high carbon steel. It's a half stop design and has a pretty stout spring but it's very solid and doesn't feel bad at all in the hand.

It came paper cutting sharp and after a few minutes on my sharpmaker it shaves nicely. Been in my pocket all week and as far as office cutting chores go it does as well as my Buck 110 or my large Sebenza and everything in between.

The simple design is kind of what attracted me to it and so far it has yet to disappoint. Not the best knife for someone with hand strength limitations but for a neat, inexpensive knife I like it. Had I not found Garret Wade I probably would not have ordered it as getting one from France would have run $60 or more.

If you want something even slimmer, but still has a long blade, that is great for food prep
