I added new pics of my Vancouver Rescue knife. It came in time for me to sharpen it and send it out to its new owner for X-Mas!! I tried sharpening it with my stones and only made a mess of the edge

Then I pulled out my grinder outside, ignoring the snow on the ground, and tries putting an edge on it with my grinder for the first time. WOW!!! I must sharpen ALL knives with that now! Sharpmaker Schmarpmaker, get a grinder and a buffing wheel!

Cray, u learned the trick of the greats...belt sanders rule for sharpening!!!

Also, get a buffing wheel and buff the edge with it. Really polishes that sucker. Convex grind the edge with slack belt, like 220 worn out, then a high grit, like 600, the strop with the buffing wheel...but BE CAREFUL!!!

Blades get very sharp and polished and last a long time with the slightly convex style i just described..got that from Boye's book!

Belt sanders are the way to go for sharpening...I can sharpen a blade like i described from totally dull to hair popping and about 2 ro 3 minutes now!! Much faster than the lanksy and free hand!

Yeah Taz, I look at my sharmening stones now as dumb rocks! I sanded with a very dull 180 then on a 400 grit. The 400 heats things up quick!! I buffed the edge up a bit too on a buffing wheel I have chucked into my drill press. To get THE sharpest edge you can get a belt sander is IDEAL!!!! I have never gotten a blade that sharp before.

hey crayola, nice knives

I'll have to try out sharpening my knives on a belt sander when I get my xmas present (coote's grinder and 1 1/2 hp motor, it's been sitting under the tree for a week

). It is a pain in the butt trying to get an edge on a hardened ATS34 butter knife

Crayola you've come a long way! I too sharpen with a slack belt and a buffing wheel. I went to Lee Valley in Calgary and got a hard felt (30 bucks)wheel that you can really lean into. It's lasted about 5 years now.

Hugh

I KNEW YOU WOULD SAY THAT ROBERT!! Or is it Master Po?? Anyways, YES!!! I made AND sharpened a knife!! Next I'll learn how to solder a guard and then I'll be unstopable!! Um, I did not sharpen Lyndsey's knife yet as it is at the lather dude's place getting a nice sheath made for it. But when I get it back, guess how I'm gonna sharpen it!!!

Again, many thanks to all who have helped me along so far, and a special thanks to you Master Po for although you are blind and are in need of dental work, you sure can teach a young guy many tricks!
