i know i'm gonna get my ass kicked for even asking this...but what do you all think of the Spyderco Native? i know it's got CPM 440v steel, something i didn't have in my collection, and that its lock is like butter... but what are some tactical uses? it is fully serrated. i already bought it, and i did carry it with me, if i am 100% convinced to keep it, it will probably become my EDC since the size it perfect.

please give a newbie a few pointers, thankx!

aXed, I just bought a semi-used Native today and I haven't been able to put it down. This model is of the GIN-1 steel version, so it isn't new, but everything in it is still solid. The size is perfect for EDC, yet the 3" blade can handle a variety of cutting tasks. It's a small powerhouse, IMO. And the ergonomics are astounding to me, this knife has an excellent grip.

The CPM440V steel is great for edge retention, from what I understand. I am currently waiting for my Spydie Military in the 440 to arrive, and I can't wait. The only problem with this steel, is that you should not let it get dull. If this happens, you will need a diamond stone to reprofile the edge, this steel is tough!

My Native, as of today, is my new EDC, until my Military Plainedge arrives. But even then, the Native will be my secondary EDC, just in case I need those serrations. You may want to consider your Native SE as your backup.....

just an idea for you.;)

Hey aXed you already know how good a knife it is...why suddenly the doubt huh?

Agreed with KBR...don't let it get too dull or you will suffer to get an edge back on it. And been serrated it would be a lot tougher than your g10 police to get an edge. Do u have any other fully serrated blades? if not then that is one good reason for keeping this one..plus you got an amazing deal on it...

I've been eyeing them myself and it's the perfect size for my front/back pocket or even waistband carry. Sometimes the police tends to be too long and conspicuous imho...SO the native is a perfect fit!!

I think the serrated edge will be of more use to you as well when you go camping. Through rope and nylon like butter...The non-serrated tip is also just perfect for small things like opening packages or envelopes..or slicing a fruit...

For me it would probably see more usage than my police

Anyway those are just my thoughts on that hottie..

aXed - why do you think you'd get your ass kicked?

The Native is a great knife with a good reputation and a solid following. Mine is G-10 w/blue shell inlay & 440V and I really enjoy using it. Do a search on "Native" and you'll find hundreds of posts about how great this knife is.

I'm no expert here, but I would think that you may want to check out the review that Fred Perrin did for the native. It's on his domain, Here's the exact URL address:

Sorry, I guess I had a trans-cranial-rectal transference there. Anyway, he gave it a good review, and he seemed to mention somewhat of its tactical possibilities.

Anyhoo, I hope this helps!

Alright alright, you guys convinced me... i do love the size. i agree with BOK (by the way, you sound like a stalker.. and hottie??) that the Police is a little too big to carry as an EDC. so i've decided to keep it (besides the fact that it's too late to return since i've slathered vaseline all over it X D)

thanks guys!

ps. thx for the site SpyderJon, i'll check it out right now

I'm simply glad I could help. With all the help that people here have given me since I've been here, it feels good to finally be able to answer at least ONE question!!! :D

I hope the link was informative!

Great knife design, great size. I'm sure it will remain one of your favorites

Vaseline???!!

Hmmmm...... do I even want to ask.....?

I was thinking the same thing. What the hell are you "slathering" vaseline all over your knife for??!!! that's not the right lube for your knife...

Anyway why is it that the blade of the native does not snap back into place like the delica/endura/police when opened just slightly? Is it just aXed's knife (the only one I've seen) or are all the native's like that?

I haven't used either of mine in a long time, but as I remember, my blue G-10 Native doesn't snap back. BUT, I think that my FRN GIN-1 Native does. I'm guessing it is just the way the pivot is adjusted on my blue Native.

Thankx for that BOK... but the reason I slathered Vaseline all over my native was because some doos told me that it would loosen the lock it a bit and help me break into the knife. But i won't be using the vaseline anymore since another unnamed doos lent me some of his teflon based bike oil...:D

(hmm... now for the rest of the vaseline...)
