Please don't make the same mistake that I made.

I was recently involved in a trade through the BF knife exchange. In the story to follow I am in no way trying to blame the other party and I take full responsibility for my error, please note that I said my error. The knife in question was one that I had been looking for over the course of the last two months and I was glad when I found it being offered for trade. I offered a knife of equal or slightly greater value in return and the deal was struck. When I got the knife in the mail I noted that it was as described in the post or even slightly better. However, it came with no box. When I re-examined the post I noticed that it made no mention of a box or lack there of. I had just assumed it had a box since most folks state when there is no box. So in the future if you are thinking of trading please think to inquire about the box if it is not specifically mentioned. I know that I will from now on. As for the knife itself, I am pleased with it and plan to keep it. BTW if anyone has an empty Spydie box laying around I would be glad to buy it off of you.

I know that it sucks to not get the box with the knife, but at least it's better than getting a box without a knife in it :). IMHO, Unless it's a super rare spyde, not having a box shouldn't devalue it any. Heck Most top makers stuff doesn't come with a box at all!

I'll add my own.

I was excited to get a knife at a good price.

Turns out it was a knife that had been sent back for service and was returned not the the sellers satisfaction. It was not disclosed in the forsale add.

Now when I send email about a knife, I always ask if the knife has been returned for service.

What model? That is to say, what box do you need? I never plan to trade or sell any of my Spydies so my boxes are pretty much useless. If I can help, I'd be glad to. Cheers.

If I wanted a box, I'd make sure that the other person described the knife as NIB.

But how about LNIB? "Like" modifies "new", but does it also modify "new in box"? So the latter would mean something like, "this knife is LIKE a knife that was new in the box (but this knife is not in the box)."

What the hell am I talking about? Too many linguistics/logic/philosophy courses this semester. I'm gonna go cool off my brain.

It's always best to ask lots of questions to be sure of what you're getting. One time I bought a knife, it was described as "carried but only a few times, and rarely used if ever" and LNIB. The knife wasn't exactly LNIB to me when I got it, as the clip paint was coming off. To me, LNIB means exactly what it says, and it's not some general way to describe a "somewhat new knife."

I describe as is... ie: some carry but little cutting, paint coming off on edges of clip, light wear marks on the blade. Thats my description of carried/LNIB. I managed to get the last few as NIB, still in factory condition. Giving accurate desc and pics is the ideal way to go.

I'll bet that if you send them an SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) the kind folks at Spyderco will send you a box assuming it's a current- or recent-production knife.

In my experience I never expect anything like a box unless it specifically states that it has one. When I post adds for anything online, if I have the box I will mention that, but if I don't then I don't mention it. Not because I'm trying to hide anything, just because I don't think it is really pertinent.

I'm glad many of you have looked at this thread. I figure I'm not the only one that might not think to ask about the box. I know that the value hasn't been impacted too negatively, I just like to have boxes for all my knives. Gollnick, thanks for the idea about contacting Spyderco. I might just do that. Harry, I'll email you the model and specs. I would rather not give them over the forum due to the fact that I don't want to draw negative attention to the other party, again this was my own fault and not theirs.

There was a time when I wouldn't want a knife without a box, no matter what the condition of the knife. That used to be my primary method of storage. However now adays it means very little to me. That is if the knife ends up being a keeper. I do think that lack of a box does have a negative effect on trading or selling of a knife. Personally, I make sure to mention that a knife in the exchange is lacking or includes a box.

Hey Trane, my email is blocked from public viewing so that ain't gonna work. Secondly, I did some checking and think I know what box you need. Sadly, I don't have it. I truly hope you'll be able to find a box and regret that I don't have one to give you. Cheers.

Harry,
No sweat man, thanks for the thought. Take care.

PS: Harry,
Just in case you guessed wrong, it wasn't the trade with Jazzman. The Centofante came razor sharp and in the box. t_f

I have an LNB (Like New Box) Chris Reeves small Sebenza box and packing (lost knife) that's not doing anything. I would think that a Spydie would be happy to live in a Chris Reeve box. It might perhaps be Chris's first factory collaboration!

PS I'm anal about saving boxes for everything I own. This is OK with knives but gets to be a pain if you buy big speakers and stuff. I was at least able to part with the box for my fridge and big screen. You have to have limits....
