How do I tell which side of the blade is convex on my new HH, holding the handle, blade up.....the right side looks more rounded(convex, right) and the left looks flat or angled(flat grind).....is this correct. Also still unclear on sharpening, don't want to F up the blade, so can I use my Spyderco sharpmaker on the flat and the just strop(both sides of the blade) , and I am good, I have read some sharpening threads, but I work visually and have a bit of trouble visualizing exactly how to sharpen my girl.....I use the sharpmaker for normal knives, a swipe on each side and I get some great results, but a monkey could use that....:D So please someone advise this monkey.......please

Skunk, just use the sharpmaker on the flat side right?? no alternation as with a normal blade.....correct?

i use it on both sides, the heavy heart is symmetrical, it might look a lil more on one side than the other but just do it on both sides.

for a light touch up use a strop or a ceramic stick.

i have about 4 sharp makers, one in the kitchen, shop, cabin, 4-wheeler...

don't be afraid to use it on both sides all the time. i use the old ones that just have 1 set angle, i stay as close to 22 3/16's degree's as possible.

Thanks I have a newer one, a forty degree and a thirty degree slot, so I should probably stick to the thirty one eh, does a Busse require I get diamond rods.....bte thanks for being so helpful man, mucos gracias :D

no, just use the brownish gray rods or the white if just for a light touch up. i use the white with out the base rod holder, works great.

Thanks a lot, I think I am just too big a sissy to try it without the guide(base), I don't have a ton of experience with sharpening but I guess doing is learning, just don't want to hurt my girl ;) You just try to match the angle huh, freehand....scary

So is my Heavy Duty- the grind looks slightly higher on one side - is it made for a reason or accidentally?

Tree HOGger,

Quite often the coating can be thicker from one side of the edge to another as it seems to "pool" along the edge, thus giving the appearance of a slightly uneven edge.

Other times it is caused by the knives each having been sharpened by hand without the use of any "jigs or fixtures". . . and sometimes its because they are sharpened with the use of "jugs and elixirs"   :D . . . .

This would explain why my HH appears slightly recurve. Oh, did I mention I Freakin' LOVE this blade! ;)

Thanks Jerry! This has no effect while using my Heavy Duty. I love this knife - and it cuts beautifully! I was only wondering if maybe this slight difference in grind hight has anything in common with asymetrical grind. Thanks for explaining! :D
