Please give me your grinder reviews!

Hello all you knifemakers out there- I have a favor to ask. I have built a page on my site dedicated to the various models of belt grinders used commonly by makers. It occurred to me that it would be nice to have a reviews section for each grinder. I have pretty much given my thoughts on this page about all of the grinders I have personally tried- however, some I have not, and some I only used a very little.

If anyone out there feels like writing a review of their grinder(s) I would be honored to include them on my grinder page. Anyone whose material I include will be given full credit for their thoughts, and I will even include a link to the specific maker's website if wanted.

If anyone has a grinder I have omitted that they want to point out, I welcome that as well. There are a few I will include soon, such as the grinder-in-a-box and the T.W. 90 grinder. (I've never used either, it would be great to have reviews for those...)

I get a decent amount of traffic to this page. Considering that, I'd like to improve the content and improve the experience for visitors. It's such a common question for beginners, "what grinder should I get."

Here is a link to the grinder page if you would like to read it.

Any reviews or thoughts you have, etc., can be emailed or P.M.'ed to me.

Thanks in advance, all.

I agree horizontals would be nice also, I love the content so far. Very informative.
Hey I did not see the Wilmont grinder on your page.
Chris

I think that could be very helpful to some of us who may be getting ready to purchase a grinder.

I would like to see some belt reviews, anyone know where one could find these?

Thanks for the comments guys- I did get one good response, come on I know some of you guys like to write about what you do; I know I'm not the only grinder nut here. Let's hear it. Oh, sure I'll include some horizontals, probably disc grinders too when I get to it. Have not heard of the Wilmont grinder, I will check it out. Thanks.

Your page is very informative, especially to someone like myself who is considering giving knife making a try. Individual user reviews covering pros, cons, tips, and more would be a nice plus.

Feel free to contact me if you need any info about the TW-90. I'll let others do the reviewing, but I can provide specs or answer any questions.

Thanks

I would love to see more info, pics or video of your tracking.

I have been told it is better than others and would like to see how or why.

You move the drive wheel, not the tracking wheel ?
why is that important?

Where is the control knob located ?
can the location of the knob be moved for lefties,/righties?

I move the tracking to the drive wheel so that there is a tracking element ahead of the component (contact wheel, small wheel, platten etc) and behind the component. Basically it keeps tracking consistent, especially over a long 10" platten.

More videos and pics are definately on my to do list, but building, testing and shipping is ahead of them.

Feel free to call if I can better answer your questions.

The tracking on the TW-90 is rock solid. One of the problems with the KMG is cleaning up around the choil area. The belt has a tendency to jump to the side and eat into the bottom of the ricasso. The TW-90 doesn't do this. I could go on but it really is an awesome machine. I hope to own one soon.

sitting here waiting for UPS truck

upgraded from a Delta 1''x42" to a TW-90

watching Travis showing off his grinder was too much for me.

Something I haven't been able to get answer to ,

Where is the tracking knob?

Left side in the middle of that base support?

If the belt jumps wildly to the side, wouldn't that mean it needs more belt tension ?

The tracking knob is on the left side center of the frame, so tracks with your left hand while in the vertical position, and withe your right in the horizontal position. You can see the knob in the fourth pic on the images page of my site, twuertz.com.

Travis, I'd like to add your grinder to my page- would you mind if I use a couple of the images from your site?

Of course, you can always just send me a grinder to take my own pics of...:D

Instead of calling you, I'll just post a question or two here as I think of them..

Are you using bushings or shoulder bolts in all your pivot points to prevent wearing and elongation of the holes?

or just bare hex socketed cap screws in the holes ?

Especially, the main pivots are supporting quite a weight, and the tensioning mechanism holds considerable belt tension,it seems to me that the holes could wear and elongate quickly if they were just threads in drilled holes.

Shoulder bolts-(hardened and precision ground shaft bearing surface.)
