I am looking at purchasing a Fusion Battle Mistress for real use. If I could trouble the experts here to answer some questions, I'd be most appreciative.

1) I notice there is an almost (if not actual) cult-like following for Busse knives. In your own words, why?

2) How durable are the blade finishes? I have seen (more like gawked at) the pictures in the pics-only thread. While I would like to get a finish other than the crinkly black, I wonder if tan (for example) would hold up to heavy chopping without chipping or flaking?

3) For those who have them, how would you rate the Busse's in comparison to the Ontario RTAK?

4) How often does Busse come out with a new knife design? I've seen dozens of variants, but only one for sale on the primary market. Am I missing something obvious?

Please note that this particular knife purchase would be adopted as the TEOTWAWKI/BOB main knife and chopper. Others I have seen here would be purchased strictly for collection and drooling.

Oh, and any finish/handle color combinations you could recommend to help me decide would be helpful, too. Most of the pics I've seen do NOT have descriptions of what they are!

Thanks for your time and patience. I suspect I'm on the verge of catching yet another viscous addiction! :p

i am really only qualified to answer #3. the Busse BM and the RTAK can't really be compared it would be like comparing a ford pinto to a M1-Abrams battle tank. And a friendly word of advice if you see a Busse that you want in the exchange you'd better buy it because if you wait awhile to think it over, it will be gone when you come back.

1) I notice there is an almost (if not actual) cult-like following for Busse knives. In your own words, why?

Because I only purchase the best products in life. It's a Busse thing. Infi steel is one of the best steels around, period. No competitor has yet to step forward and challenge Busse Combat to a live demo. Just remember, what ever broke your busse, probably killed you 5 minutes earlier

I've heard tan is the best coating for wear/tear. I personally haven't seen any busse coatings flake. I've seen them smooth and wear off after serious beatings. No worries on no coating, as INFI is suprisingly stainless, even though it's not classified as such

3) For those who have them, how would you rate the Busse's in comparison to the Ontario RTAK?

Busse is by far a better quality knife. While in it's own right and price accordly (RTAK), the Busse will be better

It depends. It was supposed to be monthly, but due to demands, it's roughly every couple months. Some knives can be picked up at the busse company store

Someone else should have pic of that

Others will be along shortly

Zaphod,
Welcome to the Busse Forum, I'm glad that you stopped by.

I will try to answer the questions that I feel qualified for.

Busses are extremely high performance knives, they have proven performance in the real world.

They have a strong following because they are great knives, they are a great company, the customer service is top-notch and Jerry makes it fun to hang out here. (there have been contests when thousands of $ worth of knives have been given away by Jerry, Jerry participates in the forums and answers questions, The HOG feast at Blade is fun and Jerry picks up the tab, just to name a few) What other manufacturer spends so much time hanging out with his customers and giving us free food and knives ;)

On top of that the designs are great, and the knives have the best performance and resell of any others on the market.

If you don't like the black crinkle coat, try the tan, I think it may well be tougher than the black.

I don't like to compare Busse knives to other companies, if you are interested I'm sure you can find some reviews of each on the forums or on Cliff Stamps website. I have chosen to buy Busse and Swamp Rat knives because of there unmatched performance and durability.

The model available to order via the website at www.bussecombat.com changes every 2-3 months, previous models can often be found at www.bussecompanystore.com and on the exchange and Ebay.

If you find a picture of a knife you like post the picture here and we'll give you the info on it

I hope this helps

:D:D

Welcome to the Busse Forum Mr. Beeblebrox!

The answer is, of course, 42.........(a sip from my Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster).........Now what were the questions again?

Just remember, what ever broke your busse, probably killed you 5 minutes earlier

Hahaha! Makes me think of being attacked by Predator or Alien. :D

Oh and another plus: Jerry will replace your knife if that ever happened.

Welcome to the forums. Eric Isaacson and Knife Addict pretty much summed it up. I think you will pretty much get the same reply from everyone else. Good luck, and I would also recommend the tan blade, and if you have larger than average hands, the tan magnum handle.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and replies. I suspect I'll be joining the addiction, er..... the club soon! :D

I mentioned the RTAK-II above. Well, mine just arrived today and all I can say is WOW! If the Busse's are really that much better (and they certainly seem to be) then I suspect I'm going to be bowled over when the first one gets here.

I've recently become quite taken by taken by the Ontarios: well-designed, tough as nails, and priced pretty damned nicely. I also snagged a Becker BK1, but after seeing the Busse has had a similar blade shape, well, let's just say that one grows and evolves. I suspect these will be my last "generic" knife purchases. ;)

As if I needed anything else to be blowing money on! :grumpy:

gotta say what i like best, superb quality and customer service aside, is the pure joy in attaining busses. just participated in my first ganza, and scored! albeit my third choice, but i was still thrilled to here from amy.
that brings up another point, how many other forums get regular visits from company employees and.......the OWNER?!
not to mention all the hogs here who keep me company and entertained endlessly.  :D :D :) :D

Three more questions:

1) What is the difference between the standard handles and the Magnum ones?

2) Does anyone have a pic of a tan knife with a snakeskin handle?

3) What's a Hog?

1.magnums are thicker
2.have a snakeskin and satin
3.hog=one inducted into hogdom:D (im not one.)

heres some snakeskins on different stuff. each look similar but not identical. grips and meaner street (larger knife) scales are very similar, look and feel.

Remember Folks,

The difference is not mainly how the knife looks, not in the appearance.

The Difference is in the Performance, Mainly in how long the knife will stay sharp cutting Soft Clean materials like wood,Rope, flesh, Skin, bone and wood.

Plus the ease of resharpening, the malleablilty of the steel and the tendency to deform rather than chip when hitting hard things like nails, stones and wire.

Performance knives, not mainly pretty knives.

Folks remember the roots of Busse knives and INFI in particular is in Performance.

sure looks like it to me. snakeskins always have a personality all their own. could be a tiger hide? probably snakeskin.
