I was (as many of you probably are) a member of Bushcraft USA and made the mistake of stating when I posted a beautiful blade I had just built, that the old feller across the street paid for the parts $30, and gave me a $20 tip because he was so thrilled with the turnout.
Well, I guess in their eyes, that makes me a "Vendor", and they proofed the thread...
Well I just finishe a gorgeous Mora #2 that like most of us when we make something nice or useful, like to share.... Well, I made sure and posted that it was a personal build for myself, and that it was NOT going to be sold.
Within an hour another scolding PM from a mod, and my thread (which on an iPad is a TON of work) was deleted.
I was furious, as I only build as a hobby, so I told them to shove my paid membership up their arse or something to that effect...

My question is, if I post really nice knife builds that are obviously custom, is that allowable here, where should they be posted, and must one state that it is not for sale, etc?

Just want to show off my work, but don't want to waste a bunch of time posting only to have it erased.

Thanks for any advice you can give me....

CJ

Posting what you build is acceptable, mentioning prices or saying it is for sale in any way is not allowed unless you have paid for the proper level of membership. We do have a trade forum where you can post items for trade, but you can't mention prices.

People post photos of what they make in this forum occasionally, but mostly in the gallery forum or in the custom knifemakers forums.

Yes, it's allowed. In fact, the tinkering, maintenance and embellishment forum is kind of dedicated to that.

Because of past abuses by some members who wished to circumvent site policy, the following rule has been adopted:

The only members who may promote or display their personally built knives, services and/or products in the discussion threads or via their signature or home page listing in their user profile are "Manufacturers", "Dealers" and "Knifemaker/Craftsman/Service Providers".

That said, nobody is going to lose any sleep over the occasional hobby/recreation built or modified knife you may display provided that it is clear from the outset that what your are displaying was made strictly for yourself and is in no way, shape or form available for purchase or order. (Warnings, infractions or loss of privileges on the site can follow from disregard of those rules as they are enforced for the benefit of those members who pay for the privileges such activity encroaches upon.)

You can use the links below my signature for further information and reference.

Thanks folks, that clears a lot up. But what about building knives as gifts? Again, I couldn't make a living doing this if I wanted to, but I will be building a lot of knives. My son wants one, my stepson, another neighbor down the street...
I will just make sure that even if they just pay for the supplies (scales, blades), I won't mention it, as some idiots think that constitutes selling... Even though you are donating many, many hours for that "paid for" knife....
It's just a hobby I got back into because my physical limitations even took away fishing from me.... So I do it to keep busy.

Thanks again for the help.

And for those on here from BCUSA (Skog, Cody, others), my post that got poofed and set me off WAS/IS my personal ideal Mora.... There was NO reson for them to erase that thread. And any "Vendor" who felt competition from me due to those knives, probably shouldn't be in the business of selling knives. People like Cody could run circles around me and build 10 better blades to every one I fumble through.

Nuff' said...

This site is not a message board for cross-forum posting or issues. We don't condone or allow it. Please refrain from such.

If you intend to build and display a lot of knives on this site, my recommendation is to purchase a "knifemaker" membership and avoid the potential issues that will invariably come up.

Obviously you don't have to post them here but since you wish to do so and benefit from the discussion and community spirit it may engender, perhaps erring on the side of caution and helping to sustain this site at the same time may be an option. That is entirely up to you but I can assure you that it will help prevent the issues that will come up as fellow members report future posts.

Was the "cross forum" in red thing because I mentioned having a problem with another forum? If so, I apologize, I just wanted people to understand why I was gun shy about posting pictures of my knives and therefore, asking the question.
I nearly ALWAYS contribute to worthy forums, and had just done so on the other site for six months (got about 6 days), so I have no problem being a contributor. I know these boards aren't cheap to run.
But due to 3 years or surgery after surgery, funds are very tight, so I usually cannot contribute a whole lot. I will look into the "Knifemaker" cost, if it's to too much, no problem.... But otherwise, I will just post pics of the knives I am really proud of (we all like to show off our skilz, no?) or those that may have a new idea to share.
I know I am really getting a kick out of these wooden sheaths, and going to move from plywood and door trim material, to exotic woods.... Don't see much of that!

Thanks for your very polite post and advice. Noted and placed on hard drive.....

Correct. We don't want to introduce issues, squabbles, vendettas, pissing matches or any other matters (I think that blanket covers most of 'em) which are not connected with our forums.

We've had our share of "us vs. them" threads over the years and frankly it's just a waste of everyone's time. Easiest way to deal with it is to just not go there or shut it down before it goes any further.

Understood that you weren't aware of the protocol but since you named some members over there and brought the subject up in two posts I wanted to make sure that we were clear that we don't intend to travel that road. (By the same token we will not permit unwarranted attacks on you here by our own or any other members registering for the purpose.)

Enjoy your time here.

Very clear, and may I commend you on your style.... To the point, not condescending or "I hold the Power", etc.
Thank you very much, and I will be sure to follow the rules, and hopefully don't toe too near the line. I will do my best not to.

Just a quick shot of my new Mora.... I love and still use my ugly old red one on a daily basis, but this one will be used as my "Dress Up" Mora, shall I find the occasion to do so (Rendevous, etc.?).... Used a #2 blade, i like the bead blast look though.
And the wood is Oregon Juniper, not easy to find such a nice piece...
Thanks again for the clarification, won't be posting many pictures, but if I decide to build a bunch, I will buy the Knifemaker membership for sure.

You're very welcome and thank you for the kind words.

Let's close this thread now so that we can keep it on the topic of "service & support" rather than get into knife images and ensuing discussion.

Feel free to take your images and future conversation on the knives to the "gallery" or the discussion forums.
