OK, i read where strait razors should be out of a high carbon, my question is would D2 work for a strait razor blade? Ive read where it is a High Carbon steel, but I also read where its a stainless steel. So what do you all think? I think it would hold the edge a good long time, just not sure if you could get it down as fine as needed to shave.....

Ingot D2 tends to be toothy due to large carbide crystals, which would tend to pull uncomfortably when shaving. CPM D2 would work better, due to smaller grain size. The steels used for razor blades are very fine-grained for this reason.

There are some very good razors made from stainless. They are a bit harder to sharpen, but tend to hold their edge a little longer. I have an 8/8 Henckels that has a stainless blade. It is a joy to use.

I don't use a straight razor very much but the ones made from O1 work the best for me. Not even the slightest bit stainless though so some care is required.

D2 is stainless?!?!?!!

I had a Benchmade with D2 steel and it used to rust all the time just from carrying it in my pocket. I ended up giving it to my stepdad b/c it rusted so much.

D2 is what they call a semi SS and in ttruth how you HT and finish the blade has alot to do with how much it will rust
even a 52100 carbon blade will rust less if its mirror finished
