Hi there,

My father-in-law just passed away and we found this Buck Lockback knife in his dresser drawer. We would really appreciate any help in identifying it. We have done a little research – it appears it might be a limited edition 112. The problem is that there is no model number imprinted onto the knife:

The ‘anvil’ logo suggests it was produced in 2002.
The blade is 3 inches long – the same as a 112.
The knife closed is 4 1/4 inches long – same as a 112.
The blade and bolsters display a silver colored mirrored material.
There is a 159 / 200 engraving in the blade.

Is the handle material Brown Elk Horn?
Your help is appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

sorry for your loss of your father in law
the knife pictured is a 500 duke with stag handles from the buck custom shop

Retrace, sorry for your loss. That is one beautiful knife. As I was admiring it my daughter walked in to ask me a question and said, "wow, that's a pretty Buck knife".

Welcome to the forum retrace! :)
Sorry for the loss of your father in law.
I took a look at the knife and found information on 2 that could possibly fit the one you have. In 2004 we did a run of 200 model 500 Dukes with elk handles. That is what you have by the way, a model 500 Duke with elk handles, very nice!
The only problem is that acording to my rocords, they were made and shipped overseas. This does not make it impossible by any means though. Did you say you have the box still? It should have a model number and or catalog number on the label that would really help.
Yes the blade has the anvil mark, which was used predominately in 2004, but our specails department still uses it on special runs like this.
I hope this helps.

First of all – thank you ALL for your very kind sentiments for my Father-in-law. He was 87 when he passed away and the last year of his life was spent in a nursing home. His quality of life at the end of his life was such that he could not enjoy his passions and interests – like this wonderful knife.

Joe – Your question about the box is what made me dig deeper into ID’ing this gem of a knife. Yes we have a box; however, I think the box is not a mate to the knife. It says B500-LE1-0. The weird part is that in the bottom left had corner, there is a 0114. This would seem to me to be a serial number, but (of course) it is not a match. Also, on the bottom right corner of the label there is a date of 02-23-07 which seems unusual for this blade. The numbers under the bar code are 0 33753 04619 3.

BTW, what a great forum!!! Friendly, quick and detailed support. I am feeling the “draw” to start collecting these beauties myself. Maybe I can talk the beneficiarys into letting me start with this 500 Duke :-]

retrace
the box sounds right just the wrong serial # so the original owner may have had several and got the boxes mixed
and the 500 series would make for a excellent collection

Unfortunately, my father-in-laws beneficiaries are the size of a small herd and are working themselves into a frenzy. More than one beneficiary is interested in this knife, so if you would all be so kind (again) = what do you think this knife is worth?

With my limited knowledge, I place it's value between $90 and $220 = LOL. Your input is appreciated.

Hi Retrace,

Value is a relative thing....no pun intended. I have one of these Duke 500's in my collection. I bought it a few years ago new in the box for $120.00.

There are a few things that can and do affect value. 1) condition of the knife, 2) do you have the factory box that the knife was sold in, 3) do you have all of the paper work that was in the factory box?

Remember the value of your knife is only what you or someone else is willing to pay for it. As such the value may change from day to day. If I was to put a value on that knife IMHO....I'd say $80.00-$120.00; look at paragraph #2 subtract $$$ for each missing item.(or condition of these items).

Here is a photo (top knife) of my Duke 500 Elk Stag 086/200

Retrace, I agree with jb as to value. The photo looks like the knife may have a bit of "shop wear" especially on the bolsters, so I would place a maximum value of no more than $100. There are two of these currently listed on ebay with starting bids of $95, and neither has received any bids as of this time with only one hour left to go. It's a great knife; hope you get it and that it becomes a valued remembrance of your father-in-law.

hi,,,
i do 110's but look at any thing with stag...
the 500's with stag i noticed before christmas seemed to make to 90's
sence christmass the only one i seen sell sold for something like 70 and ship
there are what are called insurence values also ...
what you have to pay a real store for one if it has to be replaced
street price which is what ebay kinda sorta is reflects what
some one WILL pay a privet person for one at that time ...

now yours ,, the sn on the box DONT MATCH the serial number on the knife...
so it would not bring top price as a "as sold" knife
if you are haveing to value it for probate so nit can be sold and any one can buy it then street price or ebay is aproatate..
simpithies for your loss...
welcome to buck collecting !
they call me decaffe dave some times as i have been known to have an attude to nay sayers of buck posting here...
if you want to know why you should buy or collect buck knives
look at the sales slogan contest!
chow for now
