I would appreciate your help in identifying and/or commenting on the Buck folding knife described below. I know nothing of knives, and am not able to post a picture--apologies.

The Buck knife in question is a large folder (fills my hand and is significantly larger than a Buck 110), black plastic-like material on the handle which appears to be shaped, to a limited extent, for the hand, and has some grooves in the handle, presumably to prevent slippage while in use. I purchased it as a Christmas present for my father in 1966 or so (or possibly earlier). It came with, and has, a black leather sheath, with a snap, to be worn on a belt. After my Father's death in the mid '80's, my brother in law had the blade engraved with my father's name and it reappeared as a Christmas present to me. I have been afraid, because of the great sentimental value, to take it hunting with me, but now am considering taking it with me, and using it, when i hunt with my son (also for sentimental reasons). I would appreciate your views as to the quality of the knife, and whether it would serve as a good gutter/caper. The knive shows almost no evidence or wear of usage. Thanks in advance, and apologies again for the sketchy and meandering description.

Let's move this over to where the Buck experts roam. I'm sure you'll be on the way to an answer soon.

Is there any markings on the tang at the handle? I assume it is a slipjoint rather than lockback so, how many blades?

The Goliath was made in the 1990's sometime, not 1960's. Plus, no leather sheath with the goliath.

I can't even picture a Buck folder with plastic handles* from the 1960's?

*(That came with a leather sheath.)

Purchasing it in 1966 or earlier leaves out the 317 and 307 . The 112 wasn't even around at that time . The 110 was but no black handle and the 301 but its not larger than the 110 . I don't know if the 117 would fit the description but what a long shot . He'll have to give more information . DM

Well,

As David Martin states the Buck 317 Trailblazer was availale from 1972 thru 1989ish.
It was made by Camillus under contract to Buck. Camillus and other manufactors have made 'similar' designed knives. Maybe your knife is one of those, the 1966 date is making us uneasy for it to be a 317.

In 1967 and up to 1972 the 300 series knives were made by Schrade and they offered only models 301 and 303.

So whiskers, your search goes on till you check it out at the safety deposit box. There is even little chance it will be some type of 1966 era proto-type with sawcut delrin scales; knife, bolt and hammer shield and 'slanted' bolsters.

We, as a group, await a photo of your historical treasure to help you ID it, we are a curious bunch....thankful for decent photos.
